Diane Carrignan of Employee Communications sends this information -
Policy change—delayed baggage delivery for non-revenue and reduced rate
passengers. Effective immediately, Air Canada will make arrangements to
deliver delayed or mishandled baggage at no charge for non-revenue and
reduced rate passengers, including active and retired employees, family
members, parents, travel partners, and other airline staff.
For delivery arrangements, contact the Central Baggage Office at
(888) 689-2247 from anywhere in North America or the Caribbean,
or call the Air Canada Baggage Office at the nearest airport.
Planning a trip soon? Review our non-revenue dress code before leaving
for the airport. Recently, the number of employees, family members,
and travel partners who’re not attired in accordance with the Company’s
dress code has risen. This creates an awkward situation for Customer
Service colleagues at the airports, and your cooperation is appreciated.
Please review the dress code prior to departure. Failure to comply could
leave you grounded because, if Hospitality Service is full, non-revenue
passengers won’t be upgraded to Executive First or Executive Class unless
appropriately dressed.
(We suggest that you update your Air Canada Travel Guide with the above
items - eds)
Do you have a question about the share purchase offer? Shareholders
Communications can only answer questions about the share purchase offer.
Review the information sent to your home first before calling them,
toll free from anywhere in North America, at (800) 890-1037.
Call your local Personnel Services office with questions about the
employee shareholder plans.
Participants wanted: The Trans Canada Trail Relay 2000. The Trans Canada
Trail Foundation is looking for 5,000 Official Carriers to inaugurate its
16,100 km trail—the longest recreational trail in the world.
For the past two years, Air Canada has been the exclusive airline of the
Foundation. You can be part of history by walking, running,
horseback riding, roller-blading, cross-country skiing,
or snowmobiling 1-10 kms of the cross-Canada Trail in your community.
From February-September 2000, participants will transport waters across
the Trail from the Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans in specially
designed waterproof backpacks.
For details call (800) 465-3636 toll free or check out the website at
http://www.tctrail.ca
Forms are also available at all Canadian post offices.
There’s something new on the Employee Call Centre line: monitored calls.
If you’ve phoned the ECC lately, you may have noticed the new voice prompts
advising you the call may be monitored or recorded for service quality.
This is common practice for most North American Call Centres, and was
recently added to Air Canada’s Aeroplan Reservations and ECC lines as a
courtesy to customers and employees.

The following question is from Andy Michelberger -
We would like to bring my mother-in-law, who lives in Germany, over

cleared her to come. What I would like to know, is it against
company regulation to buy a Family Fair or to give a Buddy Pass to
a handicapped person. Thank you very much for your effort.
Andy Michelberger:-}
Linda Kwoon - Industry Travel has responded -
1. The mother-in-law is eligible for Family Affair and will be
treated like a revenue passenger requiring medical requirements,
such as, oxygen, or an attendant, etc.
2. The mother-in-law will be eligible for the partner program
providing that oxygen or an attendant is not required.
3. If she is confined to a wheelchair, it is not recommended that
she travels on a standby partner ticket. Considering the
last-minute boarding situation necessitating her to be rushed to
the gate, inability to obtain an advance seat when travelling in
a wheelchair, she should be travelling on a positive space
ticket, i.e., Family Affair.

Earlier this year, a women travelling on an AirTransat Los Vegas to

When I was working in Fairbanks, we had sent a speed pak to San Diego
and it got lost. The lady who sent it called several times to see if I
could find it. After 2 or 3 days she called and asked "Well, just how
long will it be lost?". There was a long pause as I contemplated how to

the plane for 53 years! I have known him for years as he was another
Air Canada employee who worked with my Ken, Bill McNutt, Hoppy Hopkins

presentation and he was telling me some very interesting things about the
Cadet Hall etc. At this point I asked if he was a member of the Pionairs,

I told him about Vesta's and your Newsletter and he said he had seen
several at Alan Hopkins where I deliver mine to.

I said I would send him them in the future.
I then suggested he might have some interesting memories to pass on and he
said he would definitely think on it and let me know.

. Don Hancock recently hosted a group on a cruise, here is a report -
The RCCL Vision of the Seas sailed from Vancouver September 19/99 enroute
for a 13 day cruise to the Hawaiian Islands terminating in Honolulu on
October 1st.
It has been said the Vision Of The Seas was the most beautiful, enjoyable,
and convenient cruise ship that has sailed to date. An exciting and beautiful
journey through the Hawaiian Islands was thoroughly enjoyed by the 120
Canadian Interline Travel passengers in our group. Our passenger list was
comprised of AC Pionairs, CP retirees, along with interliners from Alaska
Air, British Air. The food service on board was superb as was the varied
entertainment that changed daily throughout the voyage. Although the Vision
Of The Seas, some 74000 tons, accommodating 2000 passengers is considered
one of the largest cruise ships afloat, we were very much impressed by the
announcement that the newest RCCL ship, The Explorer Of The Seas, some
144000 tons and accommodating upwards of 4000 passengers is due to sail
on her maiden voyage from a port in Finland in November 99.
Would you believe she boasts of an ice skating rink and a mountain climbing
wall as two of the more fabulous attractions on board.

Subject: Y2K update
MICROSOFT RECRUITS ANTI-VIRUS VENDORS TO FIGHT Y2K HACKERS Microsoft
is making nine anti-virus products available for free downloading from
its Web site, www.microsoft.com/y2k. The company's proactive move is
welcomed by many in the industry as Microsoft applications are popular
targets for virus writers. Although some users, preoccupied with last-
minute Y2K issues, are not as concerned about an increased virus threat
from Y2K, they still welcome Microsoft's offering. Symantec's Kevin
Murray says, "Every indication leads us to think that Y2K-specific
viruses won't be any different than any other virus going off on any
other day, so updated anti-virus apps are the key." Others fear Dec.
31, 1999, will be an attractive time for hackers to release their
viruses because network administrators will be preoccupied with Y2K-
compliance issues. Microsoft's free offering, which ends Dec. 31,
includes the products of Symantec, Central Command, Computer
Associates, Trend Micro, Data Fellows, Norman ASA, Panda Software,
Sophos, and Network Associates. (InfoWorld Electric 11/01/99)

a single corporation. An independent tribunal would determine the price
to be paid if an agreement on this point could not be reached with the
two companies.

Regards from Don Hancock.

Our annual trip to North America.
Veronica Jones gives an excellent report in the newsletter of the recent
annual jaunt to North America which, this year was Vancouver. Here is an
edited account -
We were pleased to see at our dinner some former colleagues:
Tom Sandilands, John and Jean Croxford, Spike Turner and Tony and
June Coleman. Tony has just been promoted General Manager, Customer
Service, Toronto.
Whilst visiting Capilano Bridge, we were given a certificate for walking
across.
An action packed two days started in warm sunny weather when our school
bus turned up. The first visit was to Gas Town, China Town and our first
stop in Stanley Park. We continued our tour, via Lions Gate bridge, to
Grouse Mountain. The majority braved the gondola ride, and our fears were
soon forgotten upon seeing the spectacular views. From Grouse we
travelled down to Capilano Gorge and Suspension Bridge. After a short
tour, giving us the history of Capilano and the bridge, we were invited
to cross the swaying structure. At this point a few of us decided that
we had been brave enough for one day and declined, but those brave souls
who did cross received their certificates. Capilano had more to offer
than the bridge, there was a very interesting Trading Post and totem pole
carving. We were lucky enough to catch a display of drumming, singing and
dancing by members of the First Nation. The latter obviously made an
impression on some members of our group as throughout the rest of the
trip drumming and chanting erupted from the rear of the bus at regular
intervals.
Late afternoon found us at the Queen Elizabeth Gardens and the Bleodel
Conservatory, which houses an impressive display of tropical plants and
exotic birds. A highlight was seeing a tiny harvest mouse curled up
asleep on a large leaf.
We all met up again at 19.00 in the hotel restaurant, to relax and enjoy
a delicious 3 course meal.
Day two began with a stop at Granville Island and Market, which is a
wonderful assortment of local and native craft shops plus a large public
market. We had over two hours there and could have done with longer.
But more surprises awaited us, and off we went to our final destination,
the waterfront and MPV Constitution, an old paddleboat which took us on
a tour of the Vancouver's very scenic harbour.
All too soon it was time to return to our hotel and bid au revoir to
friends old and new.
Again Jack and Aureen Morath have excelled themselves in arranging such
an interesting, varied and well organized trip, - and where are we going
next year? Veronica Jones LHR.

. Biography on my uncle, by Sharon Minchin <
Remembrance of the late Elmore Owen Martin, known as Allen or Al.
Al Martin was well liked by the people with Air Canada and had many
friends throughout Canada, the U.S.A. and Britain. He truly loved
airplanes and was always around them and always tried to help those who
shared his passion. T.C.A. or Air Canada as it later was called was the
perfect employer for him as was his job in Public Relations. Hopefully,
this will provide some human interest for your magazine and I am sure it
will bring back good memories for some of the "older, retired"
employees.
Thanks again for your interest in doing this article. It is especially
nice as tomorrow is "Remembrance Day"!!
Elmore Owen Martin, known as Allen or Al was born at home February 2,
1923 in Winona, Ontario.
He attended Winona Public School and Grimsby High School from 1929 until
1939 when he graduated from Grade 10, He worked in St. Catherines, at
McKinnon Industries, a subsidiary of General Motors, as a fine inspector
from 1939 until 1942.
In November 1942 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and
achieved the rank of pilot officer and served as a mid-upper gunner on a
Lancaster MK I, "Queen of the Chase" which, unfortunately, was ditched
in the North Sea October 1944.
He spent time in Trenton #1 Air Command and #3 Bombing & Gunnery School
in MacDonald, Manitoba where he qualified for air gunner and then
overseas to Bournemouth, Tilstock O.T.U., Shrops, England, Wymcswold,
Castle Donington, Lindholme, (Boston Park), Hehnswcll , Sandtoft, Ingham
(gunnery School), Helinswell Lancaster Finishing School, #12 Sqdn, R.F.
Wickeriby, Lincolnshire,Warrington and Damhead.
He was overseas from October 1943 until February 1945 taking part in 33
operations and then returning home to Canada in May of 1945 when he was
struck off strength. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Metal
and Clasp and obtained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
He was a member of the Hamilton Aero Club and later attended IFT. F ,
Mitchinson Flying School at the Hamilton Municipal Airport to receive
his Private Air Pilot's Certificate and License in April 1946 and his
Limited Commercial Pilot's License in February 1947. He has flown Piper
Cubs, Tiger Moths, D.H. Moth, Stinson Reliant, Taylorcraft, D.H.82,
Stinson HW 75, Norduyn Norseman, Avro Anson, Bristol Bolingbroke, A- W.
Whitley IV & V, Vickers Wellington, H. Page Halifax H, D. H, Puss Moth,
Piper Super Cruiser, Cessna 140, D, H. "Chipmunk", Cessna T-50 "Crane",
and the Avro Lancaster. In 1946 and 1947, he did a ferry trip to
Matachewan, Ontario for S. Welsh, to Cartierville, Quebec for W. R.
Oliver, and from Hamilton, Ontario to Edmonton, Alberta for McKenna,
In May of 1947, Al married Gabrielle May Grant, an ex-member of the
Womens Auxiliary Air Force (R-A-F-) Intelligence Section whom he had met
while he was serving in England.
He worked for the City of Hamilton as a clerk, then going into sales
with Parsons-Steiner and then on to his last job with Trans-Canada Air
Lines and Air Canada starting in December 1951 as a Passenger Agent and
ending in Public Relations when he retired November 1, 1985 after 33
years and 11 months employment.
Al had many interests and hobbies, such as photography which he combined
with his love and passion of aviation. He was always attending air
shows, important events, or historical aviation locations and had his
collection of cameras and lenses close at hand to capture on film as
much as he could.
It was because of this love of aviation that he, along with a few
others, started and encouraged membership in the Canadian Historical
Society in Toronto. He especially loved to interview some of the "Old-
timers" in aviation and his tapes of their escapades and heroic efforts
will always reflect his desire to let people know of their struggle to
fly.
Another hobby of his was his short wave radio. He loved to talk to
people often about what was going on in their area and to discuss
politics, aviation, the weather, etch. Al loved to read and had quite an
extensive library, not only pertaining to aviation, but on writing,
architecture, astronomy, politics and history in general. He also loved
music and loved to sit and listen to the classics or just plain old-
fashioned music.
He and Gay dreamed of retiring to their first house in British Columbia
which they did. Unfortunately, Gay passed away August 1988 and in April
of 1989, Al suffered a massive stroke and spent his remaining days at
Peace Portal Lodge in White Rock, British Columbia until his death May
9, 1993.
Al is greatly missed by the many people he touched during his lifetime
and his zest and enthusiasm for life's challenges should be an
inspiration for us all.
