Subject: Halifax Meetings
Just to let you know that the monthly meetings of the Halifax Pionairs
held at the Armdale Yacht Club ended with the June meeting, and resume
again on the first Wednesday in Oct. Bowling which ended in May, will
start I think the first Monday in Oct. at the same place,
Bayers Road Bowling.

Subject: St. Catherine meetings.
Colin Bailey sends this for us -
You asked about our group here and we do appreciate your mentioning it
in the bulletins. However the group is very small and we say we have a full
house if 6 people show up. At present apart from yours truly, there is
Joe Lemieux, Pat Mc Creery, Doug Arnold, Bob Harnstock, Jim Galloway and we
get the occasional visit from Ted Gamble when he drives in from Hamilton.
Originally we had about a dozen members but some have passed on and others
have moved.
As a result of your publicity we have had other exAC retirees "threatening"
to join us but so far none have shown up. I print out the bulletins from
you folks and take them along to the Wednesday morning meetings.

London England Pionairs.
The annual trek this year is to visit Vancouver - dubbed Viva Vancouver.
Each year some 50 Pionairs and spouses from the UK visit a different
city each year for a couple of days. Past venues have been Niagara, Boston,
Calgary, Ottawa, Quebec City, Edmonton, Nice, France. The visit is on
September 30th and Oct 1st. Arrivals will be Sept 30th or earlier. On the
evening of the 30th, dinner will be at the hotel - Travelodge Hotel,
Richmond. Anyone associated with the UK operation in the past are welcome
to come and meet with the group and, maybe, renew old friendships.

. Edna Rachuk sends in this bio for Len -
Mr. Jack Jackman, District Sales Manager YEG informed me that there was
a job opening at the Edmnton airport. I was led to believe that there
was one job and three applicants. At the airport I found there were
five jobs and four applicants. That made it possible for me to be
gainfully employed by TCA/AC for over 36 years.
I was employed in YEG in what is now Payload Control. In 1946 when I
joined, it was called Space Control and we who were employed there were
known as Space Control Agents. (We had a big lead in space - too bad we
didn't capitalize on our advantage.)
My career with the Airline was always in Sales, in YEG, YWG and YVR as a
Passenger Agent, Supervisor and Training instructor. The latter was the
most interesting occupation. I started with RESERVEC II in Toronto with
ten weeks of system evaluation. With that experience I went on to
conduct the scheduling and phasing out of RES I and training on and
implementation of RES II.
Later I did similar work with PWA and NWT. I took NWT out of the bush and
made it a computerized airline.
My training career covered many cities including Hong Kong, Tokyo and
Sydney Australia and I considered myself to be proficient in the airline's
computerized system.
Since retirement I have not been interested in computers; hence my wife
Edna is the computer guru and is in our email address.
In closing I wish to emphasize that it's been fun. I found amusement in
my daily activities and enjoyed laughs with my co-workers and in no way
did my work suffer.

. Brian Dunn sends this information in his emailed YYZ NEWS -
Air Canada brought back one of its "retired" DC-9-32s from the
desert today with FIN729 (C-FTMD) being ferried from Marana(MZJ) to YUL
via MCI.
It is believed that an additional "spare" aircraft will be needed during
the peak flying months of the summer schedule.
Air Canada announced June 2nd that it would commence a new
once-daily flight linking Ottawa with Washington-DCA airport on August
3rd. A 50-seat CRJ will be used on the route which supplements the
existing Ottawa-Washington-IAD route.
Air Canada took delivery of another new A340-313X on June 2nd when
C-GDVW (msn 273) FLN909 flew from TLS to YUL non-stop. First revenue
flight was on 5 Jun from YUL to LHR. First visit to YYZ was on 7th June.

. A final say on boarding priorities!
Subject: Passes
This has reference to the pass boarding situation recently discussed
on the Netletter.
I have not seen anything confirming AC policy one way or the other so
I decided to investigate. My neighbour is a sales agent at Pearson
with 31 years service so I thought she would be a good one to ask
about the alleged policy of boarding all active cons before retired
cons. She said this is not true, all cons are still boarded by
priority regardless of whether they are retired or not.
I hope this clarifies the situation.

. Need to know.
Pass abuse complaints are rising re travel partners when they are
not accompanied by employee or retiree e.g. dress code violations,
yelling at airport agents, demanding upgrades. We are all asked to
thoroughtly brief travel partners on how to act and dress when using
this priviledge - or it will be lost!
In a speech at the semi-annual meeting of the Pionairs (USA) held
during the Pionairs AGM in Vancouver during April, Vicky Benoit, Manager
Industry Travel and Linda Kwoon, Industry Travel confirmed the following -
. Travel passes would continue to be valid for travel on Continental.
. There are no plans to institute a proceedure for paid upgrades when
travelling on a pass.
. Arrangements for using passes with other airlines are not uniform
since negotioations must recognise the different requirements of
each airline.
. Airport transfer taxes are determined by each airport, making it
immpractical to include such informationin the travel booklet.
(Note: Known Tax information can be found at our website - eds)

. Your co-pilot recently took a short trip -
Had a nice cruise from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert on BC Ferries -
a 15 hour daylight trip with lots of spectacular scenery on the Inside
Passage. We saw a pod of Grey Whales, and Killer Whales, some seals and a
some Dolphins. The vessel was very lightly loaded, only 30 vehicles, and
not too many passengers. We were able to have a group of 8 reclining
chairs and a table in a cubicle next to the windows. The food was the usual
BC ferry fare - yes exactly! However we survived.
We were visiting our eldest son and the grandchildren who are living in
P.R., so it was a nice way to end the mini cruise to stay with them for
four days during the long weekend.
However - it poured with rain while we were there, so we did not do any
real sight seeing, except go around a canning factory museum which was
interesting. We had plans to visit the Queen Charlotte Islands, but did
not consider the cost worthwhile just to have the same, or perhaps worse,
weather.
We drove to Smithers for an overnight, but the weather was cold, so we
drove on to Prince George for 2 nights and spent the day in Barkerville
which is an abandoned town from the gold rush era. It was our second such
visit, and had a great time there, although a tad chilly with over 4 foot
of snow still between the buildings and alongside the road.
As the weather was not the best, we headed for home, where the weather is
always much better, with sunshine everyday, except when the clouds get in
the way!
We did see our complement of wild life during the trip, including 3 black
bears, a few deers and some teenagers.

. Last NetLetter we gave you some information about the Dreams Take Flight,
perhaps you would want know about the aircraft CF-TCC -
The L10A was the first type of aircraft ever flown by Air Canada's
pioneering predecessor, Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA). The aircraft is not
a replica, but the original reconstructed aircraft. It was the last of 5
purchased by TCA and sold to the Canadian Government in 1939, who turned it
over to the RCAF as part of the war effort. Following that, it was sold
again, and went from owner to owner during some 40 years.
In 1975, a retired Air Canada employee recognised it at a Texas Air Show
when he saw the registration CF-TCC through the paintwork. Air Canada
repurchased the aircraft in 1983 and rejuvenated and refurbished it. Pratt
& Whitney Canada arranged for the complete overhaul of its two engines and
for furnishing accessories and spares.
The aircraft holds 9 passengers and a crew of 2, the wing span is 55 foot,
Length is 38 foot 7 inches and it cruises at 160 mph.

AIRCRAFT ORDERS
Lufthansa has placed a firm order for 60 728JET from Fairchild Aerospace
(formerly Fairchild Dornier) valued at USD 1.6 billions. The airline also
took options for a further 60 aircraft. The 728JET is a 70-seat stretched
derivative of Fairchild's 328JET regional jet aircraft. The 32-seat 328JET
is a redesigned version of Dornier's 328 turboprop aircraft fitted with
turbofan engines.
Dutch carrier Transavia Airlines has placed an order with Boeing for four
Next Generation 737-800s and 12 options. Transavia operates scheduled and
charter flights with an all Boeing 737 fleet.
Italy's Air Europe has joined the Qualiflyer Group alliance led by Swissair.
The other companies in the alliance are Sabena, Crossair, AOM, Air Littoral,
TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Lauda Air and
Tyrolean Airlines. Swissair has also confirmed it is in talks with South
African Airways (SAA) regarding the later joining Qualiflyer. If the
arrival of SAA into the Qualiflyer Group is concerned, this will be the
first blow
to the Star Alliance that had counted on adding SAA as one of its members.

. Terry's travel tips.
Air Canada said it will not resume suspended flights to Delhi,
which it had earlier planned to restart in October.
If you are planning an Alaska cruise out of Vancouver, why not start
your trip from Calgary, Jasper or Banff and take the Rocky Mountaineer
Railtours.
This is a 2 day event with assigned seating. A selection of cold
breakfasts and lunches served onboard each day. Complimentary snack and
non-alcoholic beverages served at your seat. One night moderate hotel
accommodation in Kamloops. Transfers between the train station in
Kamloops - there is even an optional Two River Junction dinner and
Musical ride.
Why not journey throughout the Canadian Rockies by rail - call Dargal at
1-800-690-3223
Duane Frerichs, who produces RAPCAN newsletter, tells us that -
At the Park and Fly at Ottawa International Airport the
attendant made inquiries and a discount is offered upon presentation
of an Air Canada ID.
The Transport to and from the Airport was efficient and pleasant.
A call may be made from any phone on an (877) number, toll free,
if the bus is not in sight.

Gord Dalziel sends these -
A nice lady just called. She needed to know how it was possible
that her flight from Detroit left at 8:20am and got into Chicago at 8:33am.
I tried to explain that Michigan was an hour ahead of Illinois, but she
could not understand the concept of time zones.
Finally I told her the plane went very fast, and she bought that!
A woman called and asked, "Do airlines put your physical description on your
bag so they know whose luggage belongs to who?" I said, "No, why do you
ask?" She replied,"Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag
on my luggage that said FAT, and I'm overweight, is there any connection?"
After putting her on hold for a minute while I "looked into it"
(I was actually laughing) I came back and explained the city code for
Fresno is FAT, and that the airline was just putting a destination tag on
her luggage.

(Note: Known Tax information can be found at our website - eds)

. Mystery solved!
To answer the query re the Logo put by Sheila Moscoe in NetLetter 374 -
Charles & Diana Shnider came through -
To answer your Mt. Tolmie question, the home belongs to Al Wilson who
was Air Canada's Station Manager, YYJ until retirement in 1974. His
wife, Georgina, is a wonderful floral arranger and flowers are her
passion. Incidentally Al tells me that his son picked up an AC sign at
a garage sale and so far he has used only the logo. Seems his wife
objects to his usuing the whole sign. Happy to solve the mystery,
sincerely, Chuck Shnider YYJ, formerly YWG Sales retired..

. Sheldon Doskie recently took a couple of cruises - here's his impressions.
As for my cruises, the first one was excellent. It was a 16-day cruise
from Acapulco to New York via the Panama canal. Dargal had matched me up
with an A.C. retiree in San Francisco who turned out to be an excellent
cabin-mate. We met several other airline employees on the cruise as well.
Gerry Philbrook who worked in the Pass Bureau in YUL was there, whom I
hadn't seen in years! He does some marketing for Dargal.
The food could not be better and there was plenty of it. The crew went
to every length necessary to ensure that everyone enjoyed the cruise.
There was good quality entertainment every night, the weather was perfect
and the passengers were most freindly and sociable. There were also plenty
of daytime activities planned for anyone to take part in.
While on the cruise, Gerry passed around info sheets about upcoming cruises
that Dargal was selling and one of them was the Osaka-YVR cruise for $513.00
U.S. which included port fees. It sounded like a steal, so after I got home
and thought about it for a few days, I decided to go for it. It was
a re-positioning cruise.
After booking it with Dargal, I found that the flights to Osaka were
all oversold up to four days before the cruise date, and I knew that hotels
in Japan were expensive. Anyway, I decided to try for the Thursday flight
which got in on Friday (the ship was to sail on Monday).
I just made that flight, many lesser priority cons being left behind.
That meant 3 nights hotel in Osaka. I stayed at the hotel at the airport
which was a top-notch hotel. They offered airline employees a special rate
of 17000 Yen per night which is about $140.00 Cdn.
There was a restaurant in the hotel which had an all-you-can-eat lunch
buffet for 2200 Yen (about $30.00 Cdn) which I had on Saturday & Sunday, so
I was able to keep my expenses to a minimum.
The bus fare from the airport to the Pier was about $20.00 Cdn. Considering
how full the flights were, I was glad to pay the extra nights and not have
to worry about not making the flight.
As for the cruise itself, The food was also great and plenty of it as well.
The problem that I had on it was my cabin. It was an outside cabin right at
water level, which meant that I had a hard time sleeping because of the
noise. It was constant all the way across. I was alright up until the last
2 or 3 days of the cruise when the lack of sleep caught up with me and I
started to feel run down. By the time we docked in YVR I was in terrible
shape. My lungs felt full of fluid and I was coughing & sneezing and just
felt exhausted. I got home and went staight to bed. For the most part, I'm
okay now. I still cough a bit but not nearly as bad as before.
By the way, Kay & Syl Napolitano were on the cruise as well.

. Here's a happy passenger for CF-TCC -
Yesterday had the pleasure of taking my 2 sons in law for a ride on
the TCA L10a CF-TCC. What a kick!
Due to a local thunderstorm we sat on the apron of 24L at YUL for 35
minutes waiting for a clear spot for our sight seeing trip around
Montreal. We were entertained by a host of in bound traffic from
Dash-8's to A340's and some entertaining banter from our crew.

A business man called and had a question about the documents he needed in
order to fly to China. After a lengthy discussion about passports, I
reminded him he needed a visa. "Oh no I don't, I've been to China many
times and never had to have one of those."
I double checked, and sure enough, his stay required a visa.
When I told him this he said, "Look, I've been to China 4 times and every
time they have accepted my American Express."
A woman called to make reservations, "I want to go from Chicago
to Hippopotamus, New York" The agent was at a loss for words. Finally, the
agent: "Are you sure that's the name of the town?" "Yes, what flights do
you have?" replied the customer.
After some searching, the agent came back with, "I'm sorry, ma'am,
I've looked up every every airport code in the country and can't find a
Hippopotamus anywhere." The customer retorted, "Oh don't be silly. Everyone
knows where it is. "Check your map!" The agent scoured a map of the state of
New York and finally offered, "You don't mean Buffalo, do you?"
"That's it! I knew it was a big animal!"

Yesterday had the pleasure of taking my 2 sons in law for a ride on

Due to a local thunderstorm we sat on the apron of 24L at YUL for 35

. Sheila Moscoe sends us an update on the YYZ 'T2CK' meeting -
Well, we had another successful T2 Coffee Klatch or "T2CK" today.
The wx was terrible with heavy rains, but we still had a turnout of over 20.
Everyone was glad to see each other with hugs and kisses. The group is
so appreciative of having these get-togethers and they always thank me.
However, I thank them for coming out. Betty Foster won the $20 food
voucher for the Golden Griddle. And Peter Bogart from New York State
attended as well.
Anyhow, there is something else interesting about the cruise I took on
the Dawn Princess (May 19-22). When we were in YYJ, my friend and I
took a double decker bus tour of the city and we went to Mt. Tolmie. On
our way down from the mountain, the guide pointed out the house on the
left with the magnificent garden. Well, just above the door was a huge
Air Canada red logo!!!! You can imagine my surprise when I shouted out
"that's my company's logo"! Do you know who lives in this house with
the magnificent garden? Just wondering.....
That's it for today. SheilaThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Subject: Plusing
Reading Bill Norberg's experiences of plusing in the early days reminded
me that I got bumped for two weeks in London in the North Star days and,
being on a dispatcher route fam, I could ride up front with the crew - but
there was a weight problem and strong westerly winds over the North
Atlantic. I stayed at the same hotel as the flight crews, many of whom were
surprised to see me again on their next trip over. Had lots of time for
sightseeing and poker. I wonder if anyone has been bumped longer?

The new silverware introduced by British Airways for its coach class
dining service is so appreciated by passengers that 6,000 spoons, forks
and knives have disappeared in April alone, according to the carrier.
A spokeswoman for British Airways said passengers bound for Sydney,
Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur seemed to be the most "appreciative" of the
grey and blue design of the set. Sydney holds a record of sorts since
more than 1,000 pieces of silverware disappeared in a single day on
British Airways' three daily flights to the Australian city.

. Brian Dunn has this information in his email newsletter from YYZ -
TAROM of Romania will be commenced a new scheduled air service to
Canada on June 2nd with two A310 flights per week linking Montreal with
Bucharest.
Continental Airlines will commence a daily 737-500 flight between
Newark and Halifax on 10th of June for the peak summer period. This
will give them two flights per day because Continental Express already
operates daily with an EMJ-145.
For those of you who may have seen the Airbus Super Transporter at
YYZ on the 16th and 17th of May, it was bringing in a new horizontal
stabilizer for an Air Canada A319. The aircraft (FIN266) was climbing
out of YYZ on May 7th enroute to Ottawa when the engine cowlings came
off and did severe damage to the horizontal stabilizer and the leading
edge flaps. The aircraft has now re-entered service.

Air Canada is increasing frequencies on two profitable Canada-U.K. routes
this fall. Effective October 31st, service from Ottawa to London, U.K.
will increase from three to five weekly non-stop.
Two additional flights will be added to the Toronto-London route, for a

This capacity increase results from the redeployment of the aircraft

Sheila
(Anyone in YYJ have any ideas about the logo? Let us know - eds)

Alan Rust keeps us up to date with Air Canada news -
Air Canada is increasing frequencies on two profitable Canada-U.K. routes
this fall. Effective October 31st, service from Ottawa to London, U.K.
will increase from three to five weekly non-stop.
Two additional flights will be added to the Toronto-London route, for a
total of 18 weekly frequencies.
This capacity increase results from the redeployment of the aircraft
assigned to the London-Delhi route, which Air Canada will no longer serve.

Subject: TCA/AC Memorabilia
I have been asked on several occasions, when and where the
Memorabilia Display will be setup. At present there is no schedule.
However, for those interested in viewing it in the YUL area....I was
advised there will be a second annual "Open House" at the AC
Headquarters building at the Dorval Base on July 16. The display will be
set up on the 7th floor.
Last week I went to Alexandria to pick up two Hudson Bay blankets and a
food tray from Mary Harker, widow of Gordon; just as I was leaving she
said "I don't suppose you'd be interested in this", and she handed me a
TCA umbrella, in perfect working order. I could have hugged her.
Mary is a real Classy, Charming Lady, I'm sure she would appreciate
hearing from friends she knew from the past.
Her address is....Mary Harker,
Group Box 351,
RR 3,
Alexandria, Ont., K0C-1A0.
I would also like to receive any memorbilia, either donated or on loan.
I'll take anything and everything that people have.
I assure you and the Donors, that I'll give their "TCA/AC Treasures" a
good home. One that will tell the stories of our own lives to future
generations.
Immediate plans that AC have regarding this project include:
- Tranferring the storage site from the Power Plant to the new building on
de Maisoneuve, in Montreal.
- Hiring the services of a Curator, an Archivist, and a Summer Student to
indentify, and catalogue the many items.
- The move also includes office space, storage space, two computers....
Hey everyone this is great News!!!!
This should go a long way to eliminate the ones that don't think the
company is serious.

Life gets easier for travellers to Australia.
The Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) can now be processed by Air Canada
at airports. This allows Customer Sales and Service Agents to confirm if a
customer has a visa for Australia. If not, an application for an ETA
can be made on the spot.
Air Canada team granted a full ground handling license at Heathrow.
After months of effort, stringent criteria for ground handling service
providers was established by Heathrow's Airline Users Committee. Competing
with over 600 companies operating airside--ranging from full ground
handlers to companies with one or two vehicles--Air Canada is one of the
first of 11 companies to be granted a full ground handlers' license.
To make travel easier, British Airways recently began offering travel
loans of between US $800-$24,000. The two-year term, 15.0% interest
charging loans are offered at BA travel shops in Britain. Interest fees
are waived if customers repay the loan in full within three months.
Aer Lingus plans to join oneworld.
LanChile SA contemplates oneworld membership.

The airline will ground its fleet of 24 aircraft from December 31, 1999

Customers and employees, they feel, prefer to celebrate at home with

Said a gate agent: "It's on final!" Then, "No it's not!"

As the flight attendant walks he tells her about the voice and what he had
heard. "Take no notice," she told him " it happens quite frequently. It's
the peanuts they're complimentary."

IT'S ON FINAL! NO, IT'S NOT!!
Comes now this story of Canada 3000 Airlines' inaugural service from
Victoria, B.C., to Toronto and on to Winnipeg. Seems that a pedestrian
managed to wander out to the runway at Victoria (YYJ), interfering with the
arrival of C3K's Airbus A320, forcing it to go around.
Said a gate agent: "It's on final!" Then, "No it's not!"
No word was available on whether the pedestrian had a bad hair day.
