I am glad to say I received a call today from the Pass Bureau confirming
my authorization and an explanation was given concerning the delay of
issue. Apparently my request was not queued to the Pass Bureau directly
resulting in the delay. As "Your Travel Guide" explains, it is correct
procedure to allow one week for processing and thento phone the Employee
Call Centre to confirm that your request has been processed....Jeff
Martin.
This item got lost in BYN’s shuffling around with the technology about
our list server and web site changes, so, for what it’s worth here and
now is some advise for retirees returning from BGI, I hope you have
better luck than they did that day.

I have been advised by the WG employee-call
ctr. to report our experience at the Barbados check-in counter on Apr.
22 & 23 1999. Limited numbers of seats were available to con. standby's.
Of the number waiting to go, the counter agents rejected retired
employees in favor of active employees regardless of priority. The Cpt.
of flt. 967 on Apr. 23. announced that he will accept one single
traveller in the jump seat. Again an older man said he is alone, but
when asked if he was retired, was rejected and an active younger man
accepted.
I would like to be advised if the past policies in this regard
have been changed and I missed any notice that might have been send out.
Also in line was a couple, the husband with 38 yrs. of service, as well
rejected because retired. I have his name if wanted. He neither did know
of any change to the procedures.H-G.S. >>This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. per

QUINTE INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW - JUNE 12TH AND 13TH
This event has been held every two years at the Trenton Canadian Forces
Airport. Last
year they skipped a year so that they could have a special show in 1999
to celebrate the
75th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
This is really the show of shows. It not only features great flying all
afternoon but their
largest hangar becomes one huge static display area.
100,000 are expected over the two days but with the huge area involved
you will never
feel crowded and will be able to examine aircraft to your aviators
hearts content.
QUINTE AEROMODELLERS 13TH ANNUAL MODEL AIRCRAFT JET RALLY
SATURDAY JUNE 19TH AND SUNDAY JUNE 20TH - Based on previous years - 75
jet aircraft and 50 pilots will rally at Mountainview Airport about 10
km south of
Belleville on highway 62.
Flying begins at 9.00 a.m. on both days. This is rated to be the best
long running model
jet rally in North America. You can read more about it at
www.reach.net/~bqac/.
I'm registrar for this event - last year about 10 Air Canada people
attended the rally. Club
members, pilots and crews have a great Saturday evening picnic at our
club's regular
flying field so look me up in the blue topped control shack - I'll show
you around and
make picnic arrangements if you are interested.
THE LINDBERGH OF CANADA
I picked up a copy of Ross Smyth's book at the annual Pionairs meeting
last month - it's a
great read and a welcome addition to my aviation library. Ross not only
tells the story of
Erroll Boyd but weaves a very complete history of the interaction
between individual
pilots of the era - some of them ended up in TCA. - well done Ross.

From the London England monthly newsletter -
Coming events -
18th May - ACRA theatre visit to see 'Mamma Mia'
21st Jun - ACRA theatre visit to see 'Chicago'
Planned - Visit to RAF Uxbridge. Tour of wartime control room etc.
Early Sept - Evening tour of London.
29/30th Sept - Viva Vancouver visit to Vancouver BC
Dec - Christmas lunch.
The canal cruise planned for May has been cancelled as the boat and size
did not come up to the standards set by the Pionairs organisers.
The recent coach trip to Bruges was a great success, so much so, that
another is being planned, but to Ypres this time.
David & Tessa Williams wrote an excellent article on the trip, much too
long to repeat here, but here are some heavily editted excerts -
Boarding the bus at The Heathrow Park hotel 06.30, the trip took them to
Folkstone and a 20 minute trip through the Channel Tunnel to Calais.
Bruges is the capital of West Flanders in nw Belgium and about 10 miles
from the North Sea. The old section has many old twisting streets and a
large market square. The city is likened to a small version of Venice.
Excellent and inexpensive eating can be had in Bruges, and a visit to the
chocolate shop to stock up on one of Belgium's famous products.
Unfortunately there was not enough time to really explore the city and it
would be worth an overnight stop - perhaps another time.
The return included a stop at the Hypermarket and duty free at Calais,
then through the tunnel back to Heathrow arriving at 23.00/ A long but
enjoyable day.

Long-haul airline passengers get coddling -
When they arrive at London Heathrow airport, British Airways has spruced
up its arrival lounge in terminal 4 with the addition of a Travel Spa where
one can go and get a massage, have a work out or perhapshave a beauty
treatment plus enjoy the relaxing specially scented aromas to help relax.
Most travellers arriving on the overnight flights are right into their
work day, and this will help them to prepare and be at their best!
Only for first and business class passengers so far.
(Cons will have to make do with handy-wipes! - eds)

. Alan Rust, administrator of the AC Family network sends this -
British Airways said today it will go easy on a flight attendant who
stripped to her underwear and ran around the outside of a plane at Genoa
airport after losing a bet with the captain.
News reports said the 23-year-old flight attendant aboard the flight from
London had bet the pilot that he couldn't land ahead of schedule at Genoa's
Christopher Columbus airport Sunday night.
But he brought the aircraft in to land almost a half hour early, so the
flight attendant, who has not been identified, stripped to her underwear
and, wearing the captain's hat and a yellow flight vest, ran around the
plane.
All the passengers had disembarked, but the stunt was witnessed by baggage
handlers and other crew.

Last fall, United Airlines told its passengers in effect they'd better
have an accurate tape measure for their carry-on luggage.
Recently, they stated that they require the passengers watches had better
be in good operating order too.
The worlds largest airline, which it admits it has a world-class problem
meeting its departure and arrival schedule, says it will begin demanding
passengers to be on board and in their seats 10 minutes before the

And just to make certain everyone hits the deadline, the airline says it
will shut the doors to the aircraft 5 minutes before departure.

The return included a stop at the Hypermarket and duty free at Calais,
then through the tunnel back to Heathrow arriving at 23.00/ A long but
enjoyable day.

. Jeff Martin has this question -
Subject: SERVICE AWARDS
Having digested the welcomed "Your Travel Guide", I called the Centre to
finally use my award ticket and followed Chapter 8-2. I called back a week
later to ask if the authorization had been completed and was advised this
would only be done one week prior to departure!
I registered 5 weeks prior to my departure date and presumed that, as the
book states, my tickets would be ready for pick up a week or so later, and
if there was any possibility of an upgrade, this info could be obtained 72
hrs. prior to departure.
Has anyone else had a similar experience recently or, in this
ever-changing industry, have the rules changed again?!

In case you haven't been to France lately, a friend of mine says this:
I was very impressed with de Gaulle airport. Instead of having to walk
miles, they have an excellent bus service from one terminal to another.
But the thing that intrigued me most was the bus on a platform. We
walked along a connection port into the bus, similarly to the
connections they have to the plane. When the bus was loaded, it went
down like an elevator and then drove us to our plane. This way the know
they have all their passengers.

This way the know
they have all their passengers.

. Need to know.
Linda Kwoon Coordinator, Industry Travel sends this message -
Regarding some clarifications on the recent
letter sent to all employees who RETIRED PRIOR TO 1992 and residing in
Quebec and all provinces in Central and Western Canada. Some of them
might still be in possession of their old ID card (with a big letter R
in the middle of that card) as well as a separate travel card to
imprint tickets.
Our objective for this year is to issue a COMBINED ID photo and Travel
Card (photo on one side of the card and the embossed priority/length
of service on the other side). The letter requested that they submit
a recent passport BLACK AND WHITE photo and their signature to be
provided on a signature form that was enclosed with their letter.
Although we are receiving many good black-and white photos and
acceptable signatures from the retirees, we are also getting numerous
telephone calls for information that was not mentioned in the letter.
The most repeated queries are:
- Will my spouse also receive a new travel card?
- Do you require a photo for my spouse as well?
- Can I submit a coloured photo?
- Where can I go to have a black-and white photo taken?
It should be clarified to the retirees that only those with 25 years of
service or more are eligible for the spousal card (this is applicable
for active employees as well). We did not make any reference to the
spousal card in the letter because (1) not every retiree is eligible to
this card and (2) it is not necessary to reissue the spousal card at
this time. Just as a reminder, a spousal card does not contain any
picture or signature.
While the letter clearly mentioned the need for a black-and-white
photo, we did not specify the reason that our system is unable to
scan coloured photos. We have noticed that many of the black-and-
white photos we are receiving are of acceptable standard and taken by
the CAA (Canadian Automobile Association). We have also been advised
that this association is located in every major Canadian city.
And of course, those residing close to Dorval are welcome to come and
have their picture taken at Industry Travel, Air Canada Centre, 7373
Cote Vertu Road West, Room 4.31. However, our camera is being
repaired and we expect it to be ready for picture taking by
month-end.
For your information, while we completed the production of these
combined ID and travel cards for retirees based in Atlantic Canada, we
expect to complete this project by year-end for all Canadian-based
retirees. Although we mailed out 5,000 letters, many of them already
have in their possession their combined ID/Travel card and therefore
they should disregard the letter as instructed.
Thank you all for your cooperation for the success of this major
objective.

contact via internet. Linda KwoonThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

human error and apologized to the passengers.

few days of visiting. We spent the whole day in the Science Museum, cost for
seniors to the museum is us$4.50, the Imax theatre was showing 'Everest'
also at us$4.50 and the spectacular laser show at us$3.00, all very
enjoyable. We drove to the coast and drove the coastal road one day,
and, after some good eating and enjoyable company, we flew back home.
We picked up the booklet called 'Traveller coupon guide' which gives
details of reduced rates for hotel/motels. Our costs were us$49 per night
in the Motel 8, Travelodge and Best Western.
The flight down was almost empty, only 15 out of 48, and the flight home
was cancelled, presumably through lack of interest, as the next flight
accommodated both bookings and still left 6 open seats.

The flight down was almost empty, only 15 out of 48, and the flight home
was cancelled, presumably through lack of interest, as the next flight
accommodated both bookings and still left 6 open seats.

. Smilie from the newsletter of RAPCAN -
A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a
comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the
intercom, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to
Flight Number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead
is good and therefore we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit
back and relax - OH MY GOD!"
Silence followed and after a few minutes, the captain came back on the
intercom and said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you
earlier, but while I was talking, the flight-attendant brought me a cup of
coffee and spilled the hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of
my pants!"
A passenger in Coach said,
"That's nothing. He should see the back of mine!"

. Bill Norberg has come through with another story -
Subject: Aircraft damage incidents and Bi-lingualism.
The recent issue of Horizons focused on the issue of Safety for employees
and airline equipment. This subject took me back to the late 1940's shortly
after we had received the first North Star aircraft.
The North Star aircraft were being maintained at the Dorval Base and the
main hangar being used for that purpose was Number 2. As has always been
the case ,when aircraft are being towed in or out of hangars there are two
wing men in addition to the man operating the towing vehicle. This if for
the obvious reason of ensuring the aircraft is not damaged by hitting the
side of the building or doors during the towing process. As the aircraft
were still of reasonable size in those days it was not necessary to have
walkie talkie communications between the driver and the wing men.
One day an aircraft was being towed out of # 2 hangar for engine run-up and
was being handled in the appropriate manner....two wing men in addition to
the tractor driver. As the aircraft moved slowly out of the hangar the wing
man on the right side(nearest the side of the hangar),began
shouting..."Arret...Arret!". The driver kept on towing and in no time the
right wing of the aircraft was crumpled by hitting the hangar wall.
Needless to say the tractor driver was shattered by what happened but
stoutly defended his actions.
When he was asked if he had heard the wing man shouting, he said he had.
...."The man was saying... alright...alright!"
Both men were doing what they understood to be the right thing.
Unfortunately it was in two different languages.

. On June 17th, 1974, an Air France Concorde departed Boston International
Airport for Paris. The take-off was timed to co-incide with the departure
of an Air France Boeing B747 from Paris to Boston. After landing in Paris,
the Concorde was refuelled in one hour 8 minutes and then headed back to
Boston, arriving 11 minutes ahead of the B747.
The age of supersonic travel had arrived!
Celtic Airways is planning a summer start-up with regional service in the
UK linking Sheffield, Teeside and Cork in Ireland.
Senior executives of British Airways have been ordered to take to the air
on New Years Eve to prove that the Y2K bug will not bring their aircraft
crashing down. BA's board agreed that the best way to convince passengers
the airline was safe if its top management were flying at the stroke
of midnight.
Robbers held up a Kenya Airways B737 as it landed at the airport in Lagos,
Nigeria by placing stones and logs to prevent the aircraft taxiing to the
terminal. The robbers then proceeded to open one of the forward cargo bays
and removed the luggage.
British Airways is to help passengers pay for their plane tickets by
offering them loans. The loans are available to passengers living in
the UK only and carry an interest rate of 15.9% and have to be
repaid within two years. The formula is targeted at holiday travellers
unable to afford air travel without a loan, according to British
Airways. The carrier is currently test-marketing the programme in
six of its British travel shops and will extend it to the 17 others if
successful.
