. News from the districts.
The spring luncheon for the Vancouver Island Pionairs was held on
April 7th at the Princess Mary restaurant, Victoria attended by 64 Pionairs
and friends and emcee'd by Bill Fisher, Director who kept a running dialogue
of jokes, stories, and anecdotes, including some company news that with the
closing of the Victoria City Ticket office by Air Canada, retirees needs
will be handled by the AirBC ticket desk at Victoria Airport, but only as
far as encrypting ticket blanks or issuing tickets ordered on the Winnipeg
Call Centre. They are not able to answer or assist in making vacation plans.
Visiting the AirBC desk should be outside the normally recognised high
peak passenger traffic times of the day.
Outsiders attending the luncheon were from Ladysmith, Saltspring Island
and Vancouver.
Bill Fisher introduced John Jeffrey who will be taking over in the summer
for the next 2 years. John spoke of his past service with the company.
In closing, Leo Goulet took the podium to pay tribute to Bill Fisher, to
thank him for the job performed over the last two years, pointing out
all the duties he had to perform such as telephone committee, finances and
issuing the newsletter, until it was pointed out to Leo that Bill was a
past master at delegating his work load! In response, Bill thanked his team
on the telephone committee, Norm Stoddard for finance, Sally his wife and
other committee members to whom he had delegated his work.
The audience appreciated the work by Bill and gave him a standing ovation.

. Lise Grondines Air Canada Flight Attendant (YUL) sends us this -
Most of us have worked in the airline industry for 25-45+ years, planning and
now enjoying a well deserved retirement. But what is it worth if we don't
have our health to enjoy it? What is it worth if our spouse or ourselves have
a degenerative disease? The pollution, oxidation, stress, lack of minerals in
our food is slowly killing all of us. Has someone close to you past away
recently or don't have the quality of life well deserved after working for 40
years....
Information meetings are held every week in cities across North America,
United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean. These meetings are
about our human cells. By keeping our human cells strong and healthy
"cellular nutrition", our immune system can fight degenerative diseases,
slowdown aging process, etc... so we can enjoy our retirement.
For your information, I would like to send you the documentation from famous
author and bestseller, Robert Allen has written "Your Health is in Danger",
based on medical facts from famous scientists and doctors (Dr. Myron Wentz,
Dr. Michael Colgan, Dr. Denis Waitley, Dr. Ray Strand, etc..). Information on
USANA is also available on the internet at: www.usana.com
Copies of the report 'Your health is in danger' will be sent to you free
when you send your name and address to Lisa.
As it is physically impossible for me to attend all of the meetings on
"cellular nutrition", I would like to:
Meet all district executives or interested parties so they can invite local
members to the most important meetings of their lives, or,
To invite all members through your "Between Yourselves Netletters".
Anyone interested in this project are encouraged to contact Lisa.
I thank you both for taking time to consider this project which is so
important to all retirees and for those who plan their retirement.
Sincerely,

. Remember when?
From the 'Between Ourselves' 1969 edition loaned courtesy of Kitch Olson -
March -
When a pilot of a small private aircraft making his first solo flight
became lost and overdue, his call for help were heard by Air Canada's
Capt. Owen Moore, whose Viscount was on the ramp at Timmins awaiting
take-off. When airborne, Capt. Moore spotted the small aircraft and
told the pilot to look for the smoke of Sudbury, then the Viscount circled
while the student pilot make a safe landing. Capt. Moore was just 28
minutes late with his arrival at Toronto.
June -
A report of a helping hand by another Air Canada flight, this time a
Vanguard Capt Al Shaw and F/O John Farquharson located and escorted a
lost Cherokee private aircraft to safety at Caribou, Maine.
Sept -
In the 'Did you know that' feature was stated 'Air Canada was the
first airline to test and install flashing warning lights on top and
bottom of civil aircraft'
Oct -
Under the heading 'A big one' is a photo of St. John's Sales Rep.
Bas Vokey with a 539 pound blue fin tuna.
Nov -
Following the flight of the Apollo moon shot, Toronto mechanic
G. Greenborough was the first employee to request a contingent pass when
Air Canada starts scheduled service to the moon. The request was denied
by Gerry Philbrook as the Pass Bureau had its own secret list of employees
destined to fill any open seats.
Dec -

CF-THI was first test flown in 1948 prior to handing over to TCA and its
last flight Nov 19th saw it accumulate a total of more than 27,000 hours.
The first Air Jamaica DC9 was painted in the Dorval paint shops with final

. Need to know!
Diane Carignan, Employee Communications, 'Horizon' YUL sends an update -
Bring alternate tickets if you are London-bound. Our London Call Centre and
City Ticket Office team advises they are inundated with requests for back-up
tickets from stranded contingent travellers. Travel partners are particularly
vulnerable to denied boardings when loads are heavy, therefore they should
understand the contingent travel rules. Employees are reminded
to purchase reduced-rate tickets on other carriers before leaving home base.
New family Customs Declaration Card for Canada. As of April 1, clearing
Customs at Canada's airports became easier thanks to the new Customs
Declaration Card for Canada (E311).
Up to five family members can make declarations on one card provided they
all live at the same address. The new card, which is easier to understand and
complete, is expected to improve service for all travellers entering Canada.
Ticketing requests on other carriers. Active employees and retirees must
allow at least 48 hours for Agents at the Employee Call Centre (ECC) to
prepare quotes for ticketing reduced rate fares on other airlines. ECC Agents
have noticed an increase in requests, often for same-day travel.
Avoid standby travel to New Delhi:
Any employees interested in travelling to/from New Delhi via Air Canada
should put their plans on hold until October when we recommence service to
India. High passenger loads from now until the end of May have created a
strong possibility of denied boardings especially on west-bound flights.
The ability to issue reduced-rate tickets on other carriers is NOT available
in Delhi.
Service to Delhi stops at the end of May and starts up again in October.
Does your child (or grandchild) dream of travelling the world to learn about
new cultures?
The International Youth Exchange Program (IYE) is looking for children of
airline employees to participate in an exchange program for Summer 1999.
Participating youths—ages 12-18 will spend two weeks with an exchange family
that has a student of the same age. Later in the summer, the other student
returns the favour and is the host. Sound interesting?

Welcome aboard Air New Zealand and Ansett Australia!
On March 28, Air New Zealand and Ansett Australia joined “the airline network
for earth” Star Alliance™.
Bring alternate tickets if you are Jamaica-bound. Osmond Harry, Manager,
Customer Service, Western Caribbean, reminds Jamaica-bound employees and
their travel partners to make alternate travel arrangements before leaving
their home base. High passenger loads on flights to/from Jamaica create a
strong possibility of denied boardings in Kingston or Montego Bay. Travel
partners are particularly vulnerable to denied boardings when loads are
heavy. Note: the 750 JMD departure tax is ONLY payable in CASH.
Industry News:
Former Air Canada chief will head up World Airways.
On May 1, Hollis Harris, former President and CEO of Air Canada, will take
over the reigns of charter carrier World Airways Inc.

Dec -
Photographed during the handing over ceremonies of Viscount CF-THI
to tne National Museum of Science and Technology was Herb Seagrim.
CF-THI was first test flown in 1948 prior to handing over to TCA and its
last flight Nov 19th saw it accumulate a total of more than 27,000 hours.
The first Air Jamaica DC9 was painted in the Dorval paint shops with final
touches applied by mechanics Claude de Lafontaine and Tony Beaudoin.

Email:
or write: IYE, P.O. Box 11625, St. Paul, MN 55111, US.

From 'The sky's the limit' published Feb 1969 'Between Ourselves'
An airline hostess who saw an elderly couple board the flight, missed
them during her count. She advised the captain she was short two people
and the captain went to help her recheck. They found the elderly couple,
in their pj's, sleeping in the overhead rack. They were used to travelling

. Found on the internet.
AIR CANADA has reached a tentative agreement with it's 4,000 ticket agents.
The CAW Union said the deal contains a 12% wage increase over 3 years plus
gains on pensions, rest periods and health benefits.
The Flight Attendants (CUPE) will meet with the company Apr 19th in a
last attempt for an agreement before filing for conciliation.
the IAMAW representing 6,000 workers start talks to replace a contract
which ends this summer.
AND YOU THOUGHT AIRLINERS WERE CROWDED NOW!
Be prepared to fight for overhead luggage space well into the 21st
century. DOT Secretary Rodney Slater last week said that the nation's
air carrier growth trend will continue into 2010, when the number of air
travelers could reach almost one billion. Slater's remarks came during
the FAA's annual commercial aviation forecast conference.
KIWI INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY...
Like the flightless New Zealand bird of the same name, discount carrier
Kiwi Airlines last week was forced to ground its fleet. Tuesday, Kiwi
filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, laying groundwork for a possible
takeover by Pan Am, after a net loss of $20.6 million in 1998 and an
unpaid debt of $750,000 at airports from which it operates. One Kiwi
pilot said that he was not surprised: "The biggest problem is we were
undercapitalized from day one..."
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS?
Looks like the first steps toward a "Super Union"
of airline pilots were taken last week when representatives from eleven
airlines formed an international coalition. The group includes pilots
from American, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Canadian Airlines,
Qantas, Japan Airlines, Aerolineas Argentinas, Iberia, Lan Chile and LOT
Polish Airlines, with Finnair expected to join later this year.
AUSTRALIAN PRISON BREAK FEATURES COMMANDEERED CHOPPER:
Why spend months digging a tunnel when you can take the direct route for a
prison break?
Just like in a Charles Bronson movie, Australian con John Killick jumped
on a commandeered chopper that landed at Sydney's Silverwater prison. A
woman hired the helicopter but pulled a gun, ordering the pilot to land
in the prison. The three then flew to a park in Sydney where Killick
and the woman drove off in a waiting car.
COME ON DOWN TO CRAZY EDDIE'S USED 727 LOT!
Delta Air Lines reached an agreement with United Technologies Corp. to
sell 119 Boeing 727-200 aircraft as they are retired over the next six years.
The agreement will result in the largest-ever used aircraft transaction.
UTC hopes to market the aircraft after freighter conversions.
So, if you're looking for a clean, used 727, stop by and kick the tires,
light the fires, and take these beauties for a spin -- we will not be
undersold!

So, if you're looking for a clean, used 727, stop by and kick the tires,
light the fires, and take these beauties for a spin -- we will not be
undersold!

. This may give you a chuckle, from your co-pilot Terry -
This is a story which crossed my desk in the 70's, thought it worth
repeating, editted. Author unknown!
The CIA could have done no more research. I had worked out the best
day, weather conditions, non-stop flights, ethnic and religious holidays,
aircraft
types and passenger loads. It was perfect. I would fly on a pass for a short
vacation. I have my last first class pass.
I had started planning a week before, 3 separate phone calls to
reservations. I knew exactly how many first class seats were empty, ecomomy
was oversold and how many cons listed. Exact numbers, no show factors ...
I had it all. I had the pattern of the flight, and my decision was made.
Everything was perfect.
'Goodness' I thought. "It's great to work for an airline.'
The expressway was busy, and very likely there would be even more
empty seat as passengers were delayed enroute.
I arrived at the airport 40 minutes before flight time. Smarter than
most revenue passengers, I carried only a flight bag with essentials .. no
lost baggage for me. I was crisp in a suit and tie, not wanting to miss an
opportunity to be in first class.
I presented my pass and settled in across from the gate. I straightened
my tie and watched the passengers check in, noting those smartly dressed
which would indicate other hopeful cons, and assessed their priority in
relation to mine.
Then I heard it. I turned full around to look at several ticket agents
talking. I'd picked up the one word: 'Mechanical'.
A non-rev feels the word in the pit of his stomach even before it
registers in the ears. It's a hot knife which carves delay, lost time,
cancelled plans, disaster. The earlier flight had been cancelled. Passengers
off the first flight were being put onto my flight. MY flight!
I searched for any threatening non-revs who hoped to board. I saw
her as she eased he way to the gate, everything screamed staff, she was too
well
dressed to be a revenue, bulky carry-on means no suitcase. Her eyes skimmed
over me as she approached the desk. Why, oh why, did the agent have to be a
guy? Why couldn't it have been a girl!
She smiled at him with everything she had, not even subtle. She
laughed all the way to the seat. Naturally she had a skirt with a slit that
went all
the way up to there when she crossed her legs. And it didn't go unnoticed.
She glanced in my direction, long enough to size up the situation,
bulky carry-on, suit, tie who else but an interliner would wear such clothes.
I wondered if she had a business pass. That could be bad, but if she was from
a competitor airline that could be good.
The were boarding now. Goodness where did all those kids come from? I
hate those cheap fares. The last babble of voices were distant now, we were
alone. She avoided my eyes. What? They called her! She made it! She swept up
the boarding pass and something died in me, I think it was hope. I think I
was the only passenger in the whole airport. I could hear the shuffle of the
tickets being counted. I was completely ignored .. invisible.
'Oh why do I work for an airline and put myself through this everytime
I want to travel' I think ' From now on I'll never .....'. Me? You called me?
The last seat? Sure, sure economy is just fine. I made it!
Everyone is seated. They are all looking at me as I walk further until
I reach the toilet door. Not a seat in sight. He's speaking to me: 'Mix up
in seating... terribly sorry.. please bring your carry-ons and follow me'.
I feel guilty, it isn't worth it, never again.
We stop at first class. Oh buddy, please don't embarrass me in and tell
me I am off-loaded, please lets just leave the cabin. What, wrong class, I'm
supposed to be in first class?
I'm seated right next to the girl and she does have a beautiful smile.
I return it and relax. I order a Manhattan and sink back in my seat.
We taxi off and my hand tightens around the glass. It was worth it,
it's great to be working for an airline, the only way to travel.

. Chris Doutre spotted this in The Economist Magazine Online Business
This Week March 27th - April 2nd 1999
The European Commission decided to avoid a trade battle with America by
postponing legislation that would have banned aircraft fitted with
"HUSH KITS" from landing at European airports. The Europeans said the
kits didn't work; the Americans said the legislation discriminated
against American-made aircraft and threatened to ban (noisy) Concorde
in retaliation. But the postponement will last only until April 29th;
the wrangling continues.

. Subject: Travel priviledges
We have three responses to the article by Larry Obrien. We will not be
printing anymore on this subject, but would refer anyone with comments or
suggestions to bring them up at the forthcoming Pionairs A.G.M. - eds.
From Peter Kralka
I do not support the proposal made by Larry O`Brien. Executive Class is Air
Canada`s premium service and passengers pay premium prices to enjoy it. I
think the O`Brien proposal would result in Executive Class being filled
most of the time with empty seats in economy class. If I paid the premium
price, such a change in company policy would annoy me no end. Eventually it
all becomes common knowledge.
We should remember several things;-
1. Pass travellers are assigned to Executive class when economy is full.
2. We are allowed to buy 80% positive space tickets in Executive class. If
one is sufficiently enamored with premium service this avenue is available.
However I would support a proposal that all active and retired Captains
have easy access to the jump seat on the flight deck. The pluses would be;-
1. It`s as far up front as one can get.
2. All flight deck occupants would have a common interest.
3. It`s not possible to get any further away from economy class.
4. The flight deck always gets to the destination first.
As I can not get to the AGM this year I hope someone will offer more than
one point of view for discussion!

and from Matt Laubitz -
Since joining your happy bunch I have not contributed anything to
BETWEEN YOURSELVES. My outpouring today is triggered by Larry
O'Brien's letter to P. Garrett of which I approve wholeheartedly.
I am not sure who in Air Canada formulates the employee travel policies. Is
it Human Resources, the Pass Bureau or somebody else ? Based on all the
petty red tape that comes along with the rules and policies, I suspect it
is the Pass Bureau, a Dinosaur that relishes in for ever admonishing us
like kids, and threatening us to take away our travel 'privileges' unless we
strictly obey orders. My colleagues at American, United and Delta assure me
that it is not a 'privilege' but a 'god given right' of an employee or
retiree to be accommodated in the best available seat.
Many airlines have payable upgrade policies, not so much for their own
employees as for cons from other airlines. I take advantage from time to
time of the offer of LOT Polish Airlines where for US$30.00 short range
and US$ 50.00 long range you can upgrade to Business Class (space
permitting). You have to get a MCO for the right amount and at the time
of listing indicate your desire for an upgrade and provide the MCO's
number.
Unfortunately this offer nor any ZZ fare for that matter does apply on
the route YYZ-WAW-YYZ. When the two companies negotiated the employee
travel agreements it was not considered that LOT calls this flight a
'Scheduled Charter' (regardless of the fact that they have been folllowing
the same schedule for years) and it fell between the cracks.
I strongly support Larry's letter and am amazed and bewildered by Mr.
Garrett's reply that Air Canada will wait to see what experience Canadian
Airlines have with their program. I hope Air Canada does not intend to
follow Canadian Airlines in other endeavors, particularly not when it
comes to profitability.
Cheers Matt Laubitz
and finally from Murray Brooks -
I have been wondering if there has been any feedback from the remarks of
Larry O'Brien's letter as published in newletter #347.
It seems to me he is "hung up" on having to travel in economy class and
wants to throw out a perfectly good seating priority based primarily on
company seniority. In my over 50 yrs of using an employee/retiree pass to
travel on TCA/AirCanada, the opportunities to travel "up front" have been
reasonable. In any event, it is my understanding that Air Miles is impacting
on the opportunity for pass holders to use Executive Class inasmuch as
significant revenue Economy Class passengers are using their Air Miles at
the check-in counter, to upgrade from Economy to Executive Class with the
additional perk of utilizing the "Maple Leaf Lounge".
I can envision many problems associated with Mr O'Brien's selfserving
proposal.
Regards Murray Brooks

. Diane Carignan, Employee Communications, 'Horizon' YUL sends us an update -
E-T call Ticketmaster:
Air Canada is the major corporate partner of the Air Canada Centre in Toronto,
but Air Canada does not own the Centre. Although our name is on the building,
we don't have unlimited access to tickets. From time to time, there may
be discount opportunities available to employees. In general, please call
Ticketmaster at (416) 872-5000 for information on upcoming events.
More awards:
On March 16, Air Canada received a Citation for our Air Canada Maple Leaf
Lounge in Halifax International Airport. The 1998 Lieutenant Governor's Design
Awards in Architecture recognises the creativity and talent of Nova Scotia's
architects. Designed to capture the unique spirit of the Maritime way of life,
the 500-sq. ft. rooftop lounge offers a magnificent view of the area and
showcases the work of local artists.
Glenn Sellors, Manager, Facility Projects, and Marian O'Connor, Manager,
Airport Products-Canada, accepted this honour in Halifax.
We thought the lounge was something special but it's nice to know others
think so, too.

. Terry's travel tips.
The latest Air Canada timetable can be downloaded from
http://www.aircanada.ca effective Mar 24th until Oct 30/99 is 387k sized.
We have received several enquiries for accommodations in various parts of
the world. A reminder - don't forget to check the classified ads for
flats/condos to hire listed in the 'Horizons'. You may find your answer!
Going to Jordan:
Air Canada and Royal Jordanian Airlines extend their summer codeshare
agreement between Toronto/Montreal and Amman, Jordan via Heathrow from
March 28 to October 30.
Phoning home while out of the country.
BC Tel can supply a toll-free number for each country you visit which will
allow you to use Canada Direct service. Simply call the number and you
will be put through to an operator in Canada or, if you are calling from a
touch-tone phone, to an automatic dialing service and you will be billed
for the long distance charges back to the country or origin rather than from
Europe which may be cheaper.
To call within Europe you must buy a prepaid calling card. It is almost
impossible to find coin operated phone in Europe now due to damage by
petty thieves, but does require you to buy cards which are unusable from one
country to the next. This may change when the 'Euro' is fully in operation.
Any calls can be made from the main post offices and paid for by cash
after the call is terminated.
