. News from the district.
From the Toronto Pionairs newsletter -
On Monday, October 18, 1999 twenty eight Pionairs enjoyed a splendid day
out at Mohawk Raceway. Again we had the use of the Tim Horton's bus.
Others took their own cars, meeting at Mohawk. The food was, as usual,
terrific, the races enjoyable and for those who do not follow the
"ponies" there was lots of excitement to be had in the new Casino.
Saville Hambleton was the keynote speaker and gave an enjoyable outline
of various items of interest. Report by
District Director, Mr. Frazer O'Shaughnessy
CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Toronto District Pionairs Christmas Luncheon was held on Sunday,
December 12, 1999 at the Wyndham Bristol Place Hotel and was a highly
enjoyable event attended by 157 Pionairs and friends. This year we had
two rooms available, allowing us lots of space to get together before our
meal. We were entertainedby concert pianist Heidi Last who played a lovely
selection of Christmas Carols, sang and encouraged those present to "sing
Along". We have already booked Heidi for our next Christmas Luncheon,
December 10 at the Old Mill. Pionair's National President Mr, Saville
Hambleton reviewed the 4 short term objectives for the coming year. Those
being to reach out to all the Pionairs in our District and encourage
their participation, to establish a telephone committee, to create more
Koffee Klatches, to try to get more people involved in our committees.
Mr Duane Frerichs spoke on his efforts to get the 50% discount at the

. From the RAPCAN newsletter issued by Duane Frerichs
BEN-GURION AIRPORT, Israel - A black cat in coach signaled trouble for
passengers on an El Al jumbo-jet flight to New York and Miami on Sunday:
The cat got away, but then a bird held up the flight for five hours.
The tomcat was discovered as the El Al Boeing 747-200 was taxiing to the
runway for takeoff at half past midnight, the company spokesman said in a
press release. The plane returned to its parking position the door was
opened, the cat escaped and the plane set out again. This time it reached
the runway, but as it was taking off, a bird was sucked into one of
the engines. The pilot slammed on the brakes and returned to the ramp.
A check showed the engine was fine but the brakes were damaged.
The 390 passengers were transferred to another jumbo and took off
for New York - five hours late.
How bed-bound BA is planning its recuperation -
There is an awful lot resting, as it were, on these beds. British Airways
chief executive Bob Ayling thinks he has seen the future and it is flat,
narrow and six feet long. He is gambling £200 million - the cost of
converting the airline's Club class seats into beds - on his hunch.
If he is right, the spending, part of a £600 million package of
investment in plane interiors, will help the carrier recover from the
worst downturn in its fortunes since privatisation and his position will
have been secured. On the other hand, if he is wrong...

. Terry's travel tips.
Your co-pilot recently had occaision to contact the Call Centre to make
travel arrangements. I dutifully selected option nr 3 and - believe it
or not - got through almost immediately - to the east coast centre. I
told them I wanted to make standby reservations of Central Mountain Air
connecting to Air Canada. The agent handled the Air Canada segments
first, then told me to redial and select option 4, as option 3 was for
handling Air Canada and connector services only. I was again
successful and got the Winnipeg Call Centre this time who handled the
C.M.A. segment. I mentioned to the agent what had happened and I was
informed that the other Call Centre could have done all the segments!
I only mention this in case anyone else has this experience, which had
a successful conclusion but, with the 1-800 number constantly being
engaged these days and I understand the reasons for this, but it
can be frustrating.

Clifford Johnson who buzzed houses in his home community while delivering
a new-model Boeing 777 jetliner. Johnson made the low swoop with the jumbo

. Need to know.
This question was recently received -
Subject: Re: Supplementary Health Plan Premiums
I note a discrepancy in my Supplementary Health Plan payroll deduction
and the rate table in your letter of February 10, 2000.
I am over 65, married and residing in Quebec.
According to your table I should have been charged $ 35.80 effective
March 1, 2000. I was actually charged $ 39.80.
Can you explain this discrepancy.
Doug Lovat sends this response -
Good question!! We should have mentioned in the last mailing that the
premium amounts DID NOT INCLUDE GST OR PROVINCIAL SALES TAXES. Sales
taxes have always been added to the premiums but I guess with the new
rates, everyone is looking at their charges with a fresh view. We
intend to provide a "by the way" notation at the bottom of an upcoming
Pension Pay Statement just to insure everyone understands.
Thanks for writing. Doug Lovat

. Terry's travel tips.
We recently asked for information on accommodations in New Zealand on
behalf of "James Riddoch" <
information -
I read your little notice in the newsletter and hope the info provided
is of some help to you. My wife and I went to new Zealand and Australia
last year (had a great time). In Auckland we stayed at the
"City Central Hotel". It is small but very clean and centrally located.
It is located at the corner of Albert and Wellesley St. (about four
blocks from the habour). You can take the airport bus - which will drop
you off at one of the "Major" hotels next door. As far as I can remember
the cost was about $100 N.Z. per night which is about $80 -Cdn.
I only have their Fax # = 0064-9-307-0685.
Hope you have a pleasant trip.

Lawson Tremellen (Trem) sends this -
If Airlines Were Based on Operating Systems:
UNIX Airways
Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they
come to the airport. They all go out on the runway and
put the plane together piece by piece, arguing nonstop
about what kind of plane they are supposed to be
building.
Air DOS
Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then
they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the
ground again. Then they push again, jump on again, and
so on.
Mac Airlines
All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and
ticket agents look and act exactly the same. Every
time you ask questions about details, you are gently
but firmly told that you don't need to know, don't
want to know, and everything will be done for you
without your ever having to know, so just shut up.
Windows Air
The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly
stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a
smooth takeoff. After about 10 minutes in the air, the
plane explodes with no warning whatsoever
Windows NT Air
Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much
bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft
within a 40-mile radius when it explodes.
Linux Air
Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines
decide to start their own airline. They build the
planes and ticket counters, and pave the runways
themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost
of printing the ticket, but you can also download and
print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane,
you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench, and a copy
of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully
adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves
and arrives on time without a single problem, the
in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers
of the other airlines about the great trip, but all
they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"

. Need to know.
Longer than average wait times at the Employee Call Centre (ECC).
Due to ongoing integration activities, such as advising customers of
schedule changes or reissuing or exchanging electronic tickets, some
ECC agents have been assigned to other duties to assist revenue
customers. In the interim, active employees and retirees wishing to
list for flights or purchase Family Affair tickets may have to wait
a little longer to speak with an agent.
Your patience and understanding is appreciated.
We recently had this question posed -
Buddy passes.
I was wondering if anyone out there could help me. We are going on a
cruise in April, Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles. Travelling with us are
two people on buddy passes.
They will be coming from Vancouver - >Toronto - Fort Lauderdale.
We will be sailing and landing in Los >Angeles.
Can anyone tell me if they can use a buddy pass from Los Angeles
to Vancouver and if not how they would be able to return to
Vancouver? Thanks <
Linda Kwoon of Industry Travel has responded -
As per the Retiree Travel Guide, the same pass ticket (and partner
ticket) will be accepted from another US point, provided the
tickets are properly completed or issued with all applicable taxes
collected.

. The rumour mill -
February 29, 2000 No 11
Because employees work on different shifts and cycles, today we
highlight some of the most popular rumours we've received. Please
continue to read the Rumour Mill for your rumour! Remember_ until you
hear it from Employee Communications, it's only speculation!
______________________________________________________________________
Rumour: All Air Canada (AC) Management and A&TS employees received
$1,000 as a Christmas bonus as thanks for the work done during the
Onex takeover attempt and subsequent acquisition of CDN through the
Alberta company.
Truth: This is not true.
Rumour: The AC travel partner and Family Affair programs will be
discontinued.
Truth: There are no immediate plans to cancel the travel partner or
Family Affair program. AC and Canadian Airlines' (CDN) travel partner
programs are very different. A full review of both programs will take
place over the next few months.
Rumour: AC plans to have employees from both AC and CDN to work each
other's aircraft.
Truth: AC and the unions will be meeting to discuss how the handling
of the integrated flight schedule will take place. In many locations,
this will involve AC's desire to intermingle employees to make the
most effective use of the resources available. This has no application
to Flight Operations personnel.
Rumour: AC is merely satisfying the Canadian government by trying to
restructure CDN, but will ultimately put them into receivership.
Truth: It's completely false to say we are merely satisfying the
Canadian government by trying to restructure CDN. As Robert has stated
many times, Air Canada is committed to restructuring Canadian
Airlines' debt and other long-term obligations.
Rumour: AC is increasing its debt to assist CDN's financial problems.
Truth: This is false. Here is an excerpt of Robert's message to
employees on February 2, 2000: "I know many_employees are concerned
about the amount of funding being channeled to Canadian. I want to
reassure you that Air Canada is getting good value for its money. The
bottom line is, Air Canada's finances are not being compromised in any
way."

Subject: System Hockey YOW
Hi ; Report from the old-timers Division at the AC System Tournament
YOW. Twenty four active and pionairs 50yrs and above played two games
with YUL against YOW included were a couple from YYZ.
The game on Tuesday ended with a 3-3 draw and the Wednesday game was
won by YOW 5-4.
It turned out to be a great success with every one enjoying each others
company after with food and drink and renewing old friendships from years
gone by.
All agreed to meet again at next years tournament with the hope of
many more joining in.
Foot note. Some of the active players will be joining the ranks of the
Pionairs by this time next year.
I would also like to pass along a special thanks to the Ottawa
Committee lead by Mike Brisebois for their hospitably and excellent run

. Charles J. L. Mackie has recently organised a chapter of the
Canadian Aviation Historical Society (CAHS) for Vancouver Island, and
sends this message -
The CAHS has been in existance for over 35 years but I was not aware
of it until last Fall when Ross Smythe asked me to undertake forming a
Chapter here on Vancouver Island.
They do have a Web page and it is www.cahs.com.and that will explain
the goal of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society.
I have had two organizational meeting so far both at the
Victoria Flying Club Lounge with aproximately 20 people showing up, many
of them already memebers of the CAHS, and were happy to see that
someone has started a Vancouver Island Chapter.
I now have a full slate of officers and we are presently
investigating other sites to hold our meetings and I prefer the BC
Aviation Museum at the airport but we also have a couple of other venues
to look over.
The next meeting will be April 11th.
Cost to join the CAHS is 35.00 per year, plus a an additonal Fee
$10.00 for the local chapter.
If you should join the CAHS you will receive a beautiful Magazine on
Aviation History 4 times a year and it really is a good magazine with the
quality up there with Beautiful BC Magazine.
CAHS are holding the annual Convention In Calgary this year
May 27 for three days.
If there is enough interest Up Island maybe an Up-Island
chapter can be formed as I realize how awkward it is to come to Victoria
for the Meetings. If anyone is so interested in forming such a chapter, I
would gladly guide them. This is a national organization incorporated
as a non profit under a federal charter. Any resident is eligible to
join, you don't have to be a Pionair or even a retiree, just anyone
interested at all in preserving Aviation history.
Please do not hesitate to contact me of your interest.

Andes mystery of missing Lancastrian -
A Lancastrian aircraft found crashed in the Andes recently had taken off
from Heathrow 53 years ago.
Flight GA-GWH, which disappeared in a fierce snowstorm over the mountain
range, was operated by British Airways predecessor British South American
Airways (BSAA).
The Lancastrian - named Stardust - left Heathrow on August 2nd 1947 with
a crew of 5 and 6 passengers aboard.
Piloted by was hero Captain Reginald Cooki (29), it was one of the first
long-haul flights to leave the airport, which opened two months before.
Relative George Checklin spent his fortune searching for the body of his
brother Donald who was second officer aboard the aircraft.
British Airways stated that they were sympathetic towards the immediate
relatives of the victims and would consider requests for free tickets to
retrieve the bodies.

. Terry's travel tips.
When in the U.K. check Ryanair for cheap fares to Europe.
During February they were advertising return fares at GBP5.00 to Dublin or
Frankfurt, GBP15.00 to Genoa or Turin or GBP25.00 to Oslo, Stockholm or
Venice. All plus taxes and from Stanstead Airport.
http:www.ryanair.com is their web site.
The British Hotel Reservation Centre is located in all terminals at
London Heathrow. Open from 06:00 to midnight.
No booking fee for hotel reservations, B&B and Economy accommodations.
Phone 0800-783-4020 or book online http://www.bhrc.co.uk
This is NOT an airline interline service but a public service.
The ending from July 1999 of tax and duty free allowances within
- and only within - the 15 European Union countries did create confusion
amongst some passengers. It is time that confusion ended once and for all.
The changed law has not killed off the bargains.
For passengers flying from the UK to the other 14 European Union
countries the duty and VAT has been absorbed by the retailers with the
exception of tobacco and spirits. The bonus is that there is virtually
no limit on the amount of money that can be spent on goods, including
wines, spirits and tobacco goods when flying within the European Union.
For passengers flying to outside European Union destinations, a full
range of goods, including tobacco, wines and spirits are still available
duty and tax free.

Found by the Co-pilot!
The story is of a BEA Viking flying most of its trip through thick clouds.
a nervous passenger rang for the cabin attendant to ask how the pilot
could find his way in such poor visability. So the inventive flight
attendant pointed to the red navigation light glowing at the left wing tip
and then to its green counterpart on the right wing. Then he explained
'as long as the pilot keeps between those two lights well arrive safely'.

HOME IS WHERE THE COCKPIT IS:
You've heard of pilots who practically live in their planes, but how
many of them have been earthbound?
A company in Tennessee is offering to convert old Boeing 727s to your own
personal abode, including mounting it on a pedestal so it can always
point into the wind like a weathervane. Hey, if you don't believe us,
go to <http://www.maxpoweraero.com/ACHomes.htm> and see for yourself.
PERNICIOUS POULTRY PROBLEMS:
A BG Airways flight was delayed recently when the cabin crew found some
unlikely stowaways. Passengers aboard the Malta-bound aircraft were
treated to a unique sideshow at Gatwick Airport outside London, England,
when the crew discovered some carry-on luggage was clucking.
Whatever happened next resulted in the ejection of four passengers and
their clucking carry-on. The chickens were reportedly taken to a
holding area -- although some passengers did observe a remarkable
resemblance between the ejected stowaways and the in-flight meal they were
served later.

They will begin on April 2nd.
Air Canada has retired another DC-9-32 (C-FTLH FIN707). The DC-9

. Smilie.
While trying to work touch-and-goes with a student in the traffic
pattern at Daggett Airport, we were acutely aware of a pair of regional
airline Fokker jets practicing the VOR approach to an intersecting
runway. Each time they executed a missed approach, but we would hold
short just in case they landed.
Finally, I keyed the mic and asked them if they were ever going to land.
Their curt response: "Negative, the company said they don't mind buying
the gas, but we have to buy our own tires."
From the RAPCAN newsletter issued by Duane Frerichs -
Subject: Alaska Airlines
Alaska Airlines has been in the news lately and when I think of that
airline, I think of a story a Captain told me a long time ago while
waiting to takeoff behind an Alaska aircraft, one morning in Seattle.
On this particularly foggy morning at the Seattle airport, the ground
controllers lost track of a Continental flight that was taxing out for
takeoff.
Ground Control: "Continental flight # 324, we've lost you in the
fog, say your position."
Continental # 324: We're on the taxiway, parked next to this jet with
the picture of the United flight attendant painted on the tail.
