Update by our chief pilot Vesta -
X PRIZE CONTENDERS FORGE ONWARD
On Aug 14,2004, Saturday, the Canadian Arrow team drop-tested its crew cabin,
with good results. The cabin fell about 9,000 feet and gently splashed into
Lake Ontario beneath a parachute. The group told MSNBC it needs about another
$2 million in funding and four or five months more of tests to complete its
space vehicle. With the X Prize set to expire at the end of this year, and the
goal so elusive, why do these teams persevere? The X Prize organizers say the
$10 million incentive is just a tease. According to their market research,
space tourism is ready to blast off into a billion-dollar industry.

. Vesta send us this advice -
Mostly for our American Friends.
Subject: Some Common Sense Advice to Limit Identity Theft
This was sent to me and I thought it was well worth passing on.
Bear in mind the references and phone numbers are American.
AN ATTORNEY'S ADVICE TO LIMIT OR PREVENT IDENTITY THEFT
Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to
it someday. Maybe we should all take some of his advice!
A corporate attorney sent the following out to the employees in
his company.
1. The next time you order checks have only your initials (instead
of first name and last name) put on them. If someone takes your
checkbook they will not know if you sign your checks with just your
initials or your first name but your bank will know how you sign
your checks.
2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts,
DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just
put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest
of the number and anyone who might be handling your check as it
passes through all the check processing channels won't have access
to it.
3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone.
If you have a PO Box, use that instead of your home address. If you do
not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed
on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you
have it printed, anyone can get it.
4. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine, do
both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you
had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to
call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. I also carry a
photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've
all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in
stealing a name, address,Social Security number, credit cards, etc.
Unfortunately an attorney had first hand knowledge because their
wallet was stolen last month. Within a week, the thieve(s) ordered an
expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card,
had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN
number from DMV to change their driving record information on-line, and
more. But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case
this happens to you or someone you know:
1. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately.
But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers
handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.
2. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where it
was stolen, this proves to credit providers you were diligent, and is
a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one). Highly
recommended and it pays off!
But here's what is perhaps most important: (I never even thought to
do this).
3. Call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately
to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. I had
never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell
me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name.
The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your
information was stolen and they have to contact you by phone to
authorize newcredit.
By the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the
theft, all the damage had been done. There are records of all the
credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I
knew about before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage
has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend
(someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped them in their tracks.
The numbers are:
Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271
We pass along jokes on the Internet; we pass along just about
everything. Pass this information along.
It could really help someone you care about.

X PRIZE CONTENDERS FORGE ONWARD
On Aug 14,2004, Saturday, the Canadian Arrow team drop-tested its crew cabin,

Canadian Team Sets Launch Date For X Prize
It seems we have a race for space ... the underdog da Vinci Project,
from Canada, rolled out their Wild Fire spacecraft last Thursday in
Toronto, and while they were at it, they said they plan to launch for
the $10 million X Prize on Oct. 2 (the Paul G. Allen / Burt Rutan
SpaceShipOne will make a first attempt Sept. 29). The project, which has
depended on a volunteer workforce numbering in the hundreds, also
announced it has secured major sponsorship from GoldenPalace.com, an
online casino. Their plan is to carry a three-seat rocket-powered
capsule to 80,000 feet beneath a helium balloon, disengage, light the
fires, ride the rocket into space, and fall back to earth beneath a
parachute. Yup. "We're very close to achieving our mission," da Vinci
Project leader and pilot Brian Feeney said in a statement. "The da Vinci
Project is on the cusp of a new era of space travel for humankind." The
project has designated a launch site in Saskatchewan, where there are
lots of wide-open spaces for landing. Burt Rutan's team at Mojave
already has announced it will launch Sept. 29 and make a second flight
on Oct. 4. But Rutan said at Oshkosh that he has planned for three
launches just in case, so there's no guarantee his SpaceShipOne will
reach the required altitude on the first try. Of course, there's no
guarantee the Canadian team will make it either -- they have never flown
their system at all. The two teams are among 26 around the world seeking
the prize, which is intended to promote the development of a
nongovernmental manned spaceflight industry. To win, each team must
launch twice within two weeks, and climb to 100 kilometers.

To win, each team must
launch twice within two weeks, and climb to 100 kilometers.

. Must know.
Employee travel to Florida is tricky. Due to the high volume of passengers
travelling to and from Florida over the next couple of weeks, employee travel
to such popular destinations as Miami, Orlando and Tampa will be difficult. To
avoid travel complications or disappointments, we recommend that you have a
vacation back up plan. Either make alternate travel bookings on other carriers
prior to departure or choose a different destination.
Calgary Airport Improvement Fee increases. On Aug. 1, the Calgary Airport
Improvement Fee (AIF) increased from $12 to $15. Exception: passengers
travelling from Calgary to Edmonton, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat or Lloydminister
will be charged $10. Connecting passengers will not be required to pay the AIF.
For employee travel (which includes partner and parent travel) while you will
be charged the appropriate airport fee, at the moment the Employee Travel Site
(ETS) does not correctly display the AIF price in your travel charge total. ETS
will be updated shortly
Policy – Payment of Pass Service
Charges and Applicable Fees and Taxes
- Pass Holder Obligations
All Pass Holders (Employees, Retirees,
Widows/Widowers and former pass eligible
employees must ensure that their own credit card
with available credit is placed on their employee
travel profile at time of travel to cover the payment
of applicable service charges and related fees and
taxes.
The automated pass system will generate a trip
billing as soon as one of the following has occurred:
Return to the point of origin or
8 flown segments have been used or
30 days after the first leg is flown
When one of the above billing criteria has
been triggered the automated billing
system will reconcile a completed trip and
charge the applicable service charges, fees
and taxes to the credit card on the
employee's travel profile.
The following are common reasons for
billings to fail to process:
No credit card on file – this may
occur if pass holders list directly
with an airport agent or via voice
recognition
Expired or cancelled credit card on
file
Credit card number incorrectly
entered by the pass holder
Over or insufficient limit on the
credit card
Should the pass holder's credit card fail to
process their travel profile will
automatically be deactivated. An advance
notice will not be sent to pass holders in
the event it is necessary to deactivate their
travel profile. You will only be able to
arrange travel or access the employee
travel website after the outstanding travel
charges are paid for with a valid credit
card.
When attempting to access the employee
travel web site Pass holders whose
profiles have been deactivated will receive
a message prompt asking them to contact
Employee Travel. Employee Travel is
open 7 days a week and can be reached
at 1 866 473 4732. Upon receipt of a
valid credit card and confirmation that the
outstanding billing has been processed
Employee Travel will reactivate the pass
holders travel profile. Once the payment
has been confirmed, the profile will be
accessible after 48 hours.

Trans-Canada Air Lines expands operations in 1960 by introducing a new
fleet of planes and by lowering fares. For the reduced price of $299, you
can fly to Europe for a "17-day transatlantic excursion." TCA president
Gordon MacGregor explains he's dropped prices to sell more flights and
increase the number of international trips. The 1960s would become a

Disappointed Vancouver employees to get second chance to see A340-500.
Last week, at the last minute, our 'Sneak-a-peek' Airbus A340-500 event in
Vancouver was cancelled as the aircraft was unexpectedly called into service.
We understand many people made a special effort to see the plane and were
disappointed when it didn't happen.
We're pleased to say the event has been rescheduled and employees, retirees,
and their
families and friends can tour the aircraft on Friday (July 30) from 3 - 7 p.m.
If you'd like a second chance to see what all the excitement's about, the
aircraft will be ready for viewing at the Operations Centre, North Hangar area
(6001 Grant McConachie Way) , Bay 4.
If you're uncertain how to get there, there will be signage in the airport or
you can ask one of the event's volunteers.
Please note: valid Air Canada identification is required and for security
reasons no cameras will be permitted.

. In response to the smilie about the folding guitar in NetLetter 840,
Tom Heald sends this -
Hi Guys. You must have missed the last sentence in the story. Reason for the
folding guitar in the cockpit was for the small storage space for crew baggage.
If you have ever had to use the jump seat you know the pilots do not have time
to play at anything. They are professionals.
The folding guitar was for playing in the hotel on crew rest. The guy obviously
was not too enthusiastic about watching TV. Also, lets face it. Must be good
for meeting people around the pool.
Regards.
