. Nice to know.
Parent and Partner programme
§ Parent travel will be unlimited on Air Canada and therefore is no
longer
considered as part of the partner allotment of 10. Consequently, parent
eligibility for ZED travel on Air Canada will be cancelled. ZED fare
eligibility on other airlines remains the same.
§ Parent pass service charges remain at the same levels, i.e., same as
partner charges.
§ The partner pass program for 2004 remains unchanged with the allotment
of 10 partner passes per year. (4 partner passes for widows)
§ Employees or retirees, married or single, continue to have the ability
to register their non-dependent children for unaccompanied travel anytime
during the year.
§ Only single employees or retirees will continue to be able to
nominate a
partner of their choice for unaccompanied travel anytime during the year up to
two people for the year.
Example: Mike nominates Cheryl in January 2004, but then nominates Chris in
March 2004. Chris will
remain the unaccompanied travel partner for the rest of the year.
§ When traveling without the employee, nominated partners or
non-dependent
children will travel at the
C5/Y10 priority.
All personal travel agreements with other airlines have been converted to ZED
agreements and need to be booked using the ETS. Exception: ID travel (ID 90, ID
75) for Delta and Singapore Airlines. These are done through the Call Centre at
1 800 413-1113
Separate Fuel Surcharge Eliminated.
Effective 19 January 2004, the separate $20 fuel surcharge will no longer be
applied to pass travel. Instead a reduced surcharge will be incorporated into
the individual segment service charges. As a result, pass travel service
charges for employees, retirees and their eligible dependents will increase by
50 cents for each flight segment on all routes. A $1.50 increase will be
added, per flight segment on all routes for parent and partner travel.

. Smilie supplied by Art Kupchanko (Pionair)
A US Air Force C-141 is scheduled to leave Thule Air Base, Greenland at
midnight. During the pilot's preflight check, he discovers that the latrine
holding tank is still full from the last flight. So a message is sent to
the base and an airman who was off duty is called out to take care of it.
The young man finally gets to the air base and makes his way to the
aircraft, only to find that the latrine pump truck has been left outdoors
and is frozen solid so he must find another one in the hangar, which takes
even more time.
He returns to the aircraft and is less than enthusiastic about what he has
to do. Nevertheless, he goes about the pumping job deliberately and
carefully (and slowly) so as to not risk criticism later.
As he's leaving the plane the pilot stops him and says, "Son, your attitude
and performance has caused this flight to be late and I'm going to
personally see to it that you are not just reprimanded but punished."
Shivering in the cold, his task finished, he takes a deep breath, stands up
tall and says, "Sir, with all due respect, I'm not your son; I'm an Airman
in the United States Air Force. I've been in Thule, Greenland for 11 months
without any leave and reindeer are beginning to look pretty good to me. I
have one stripe; it's two-thirty in the morning, the temperature is 40
degrees below zero and my job here is to pump *$#^ from your aircraft...
Now, just exactly what form of punishment did you have in mind?!"

. Need to know.
Bring paper flight coupons as back up - regardless of where you travel to. It
would appear that there is still some confusion as to when and where paper
coupons are required. If uncertain, you’re encouraged to always carry a paper
coupon with you in the event of a travel change to a non-DCS station - a
station not handled by Air Canada - such as Sydney, Australia or Orlando,
Florida. In some instances if you don’t have a paper ticket when one is
required, you may be refused travel. It’s not worth the risk, especially during
the spring break period. Furthermore, it’s important to notice that while the
booking reference may say “paper coupon not required” for a portion of the
travel, it doesn’t mean that it refers to all travel segments. In addition,
don’t worry about whether you need to use the old or new ticket stock, as both
are accepted.

. Nice to know.
New curbside check-in successfully launched at Fort Lauderdale. Recently,
after months of determined effort, we launched an Outside Check-in operation at
Fort Lauderdale International Airport. Always a busy station, during peak
cruise and winter travel season, busloads of passengers arrive simultaneously
from their cruise ships and want to check in at the same time. This puts an
enormous strain on the operation. By having two additional "outside" check-in
positions, there was a significant improvement in customer wait times. “On the
weekend, FLL processed 1,938 customers, of which 400 were served outside,” said
Brenda Buske, Manager, Customer Service Florida. “Everyone involved in this
initiative put in a tremendous effort to make it happen and I’m confident it
will go a long way towards helping alleviate the congestion. Congratulations to
the employees at FLL for delivering the best ‘cruise season’ weekend in
memory.”

. Ross Smyth sent us this article -
This monthly column appeared in the Feb. issue of COPA Flight (Can.Owners
& Pilots Assn.)
OUR FLYING HERITAGE by Ross Smyth
The controversial role of aircraft in war. During the week of December 17,
2003, the 100th anniversary of powered flight featured
many television documentaries which stretched our memories. They also made some
of us
consider the role of aircraft in the future.
A one-hour film reviewed the life of William Barker, V.C.., based on the
excellent book
on this great war hero by B.C. writer Wayne Ralph. My mother and I were among
the
50,000 spectators who lined the streets of Toronto near Mount Pleasant cemetery
in
Toronto in March, 1930, in my ninth year - this funeral being one of my
earliest aviation
memories. War hero Barker had been killed in an aircraft accident near Ottawa.
As a youth I studied about Canada’s air heroes in the war of 1914-1918.
Four of our aces
ranked in the top ten pilots on the Allied side. I knew how many planes each
had shot
down. At a teenage party I met the daughter of Roy Brown, the Canadian airman
who was
credited with shooting down the war’s leading ace, Germany’s Manfred von
Richthofen
who was credited with 80 kills.
ln the 1930s I devoured every issues of the Flying Aces magazine from New York
and
formed its first youth squadron in Toronto. An early guest speaker at our boys’
club was
Canada’s first transatlantic pilot, Captain Erroll Boyd of Toronto, who was
taught to fly
by John Alcock in 1915. Boyd flew in the war before guns were carried on
aircraft. Later
in the year he was shot down by antiaircraft fire, did not become a war hero,
and was
interned in Holland.
In 1938 Erroll Boyd, a man ahead of his time, formed the Aviation Scouts of
Canada, a
forerunner of the air cadet movement. Norm Dawber and I became early members.
We
won air trips, Norm to Los Angeles and me to Miami via New York. Captain Boyd
motored us to Buffalo to commence our experiences of a life time. This was
nearly a year
before any inter-city passenger service was scheduled within Canada. Norm later
had a
distinguished career in the RCAF overseas earning the DFC.
Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA) had been formed by C.D.Howe in 1937, and its very
first
employee was one of Canada’s top war aces, Donald R. MacLaren. In later years I
would
get to know him well but he rarely talked of his wartime exploits. A believer
in the unity of
mankind he had retired by 1962, the 25th anniversary of Trans-Canada Air Lines
(now Air
Canada) for the celebration. My role was organizing his cross-Canada speaking
tour
about the airline’s contribution in fostering national unity and in shrinking
our nation.
MacLaren was also a peace hero.
At age 19 in 1940 I had joined Canada’s national airline. Three boys who lived
on my
small street in Toronto went into the RCAF and none returned. I had wanted to
be with
them but lacked the medical qualifications for vision. Perhaps that is why I am
alive today,
able to remember them every November 11th..
In 1945 when I was working in TCA flight dispatch in Moncton, I accompanied
Captain
Kent Davis for our periodic flight operations medicals. We both scraped through
but the
examining CN doctor jokingly said “You two fellows give me trouble. One of you
is blind
and the other can’t hear.” Davis, like his pilot brother Bing, had no trouble
however
hearing the radio range signals and my vision was OK for an inside office job..
I always wanted to fly and finally my Morse code speed reached 20 words a
minute.
I had hoped to become a radio officer on the converted Lancaster bombers that
TCA flew
as the Canadian Government Transatlantic Air Service from 1943-1947 until the
Canadian-built North Stars arrived. I soon became a flight dispatcher in the
airline’s
overseas division in the closest possible job to flying.
Interested in community work I became president of the Canada Junior Chamber of
Commerce and, later representing it at a conference in Chicago, I got to know
Lester
“Mike” Pearson and met six Nobel Peace prize winners there. I became active in
the
United Nations Association and the world federalist movement, and traveled
extensively.
The world was opening for me.
In Moscow in the early 1970s I met a Russian veteran who lost two brothers in
defending
Moscow against the German attack in the Second World War. I suddenly realized
that, if I
had lived his experiences, I would have been a good communist. I began to think
that
perhaps the Cold War had been a phony war. President Eisenhower had lied about
the spy
plane shot down over Russia. Both sides used propaganda.
Today I believe that with advances in technology war has become an obsolete
method to
settle any dispute. War on terrorism is misnamed. Terrorists are not caught by
dropping
bombs from aircraft. The solution to terrorism rests with good intelligence,
effective
police action, and strengthening the rule of law. Because we still live in a
very imperfect
world, I still believe however that Canada needs a stronger air force to meet
our increasing
global commitments.
Did you know that Canada presently has more troops in Afghanistan than any
European
member of NATO? And that more Canadian soldiers there have been killed by
friendly fire
than by terrorists.
I have suggested to foreign affairs minister Bill Graham that Canada should
consider
establishing a royal commission of experts with extensive public input to
determine how
war can be made effectively illegal within ten years. At stake is our long-term
survival.
In my voluntary activities I have met many pilots. One, an American Airlines
captain was a
founder of the American movement for democratic world government. Another from
United Airlines served as president of the Association to Unite the
Democracies. Those
who work for peace and justice tend to be ignored by our media (unless their
behavior
becomes violent:). We need more peace heroes.
A international best seller is “Paris 1919”, a book about the peace conference
from which
the League of Nations was formed. The League failed for lack of member support.
After
the Second World War and some 50 million war deaths we formed the United
Nations to
ensure peace and justice. It may also fail because of its undemocratic veto and
under-funding..
I still have my first newsletter of the Aviation Scouts of Canada. In one of
its articles my
boyhood hero, Erroll Boyd, supported a plan for a peace air force for the
League of
Nations, the UN’s predecessor. The recent earthquake in Iran killing thousands
should
remind us that the UN still has no standby peace air force to provide quick
relief in such
emergencies. There are nuclear bombers however on immediate standby with the
capability of completely eliminating this member country of the “axis of evil”.
We have
plans to militarize space. Do we have our priorities right?.
Members of the aviation community should become good world citizens because
aircraft
are shrinking our world community making us all neighbors. Airlines could not
operate
effectively without ICAO and IATA. Everyone of us in the aviation community
should
enhance our efforts for peace and justice in our global community.

Many of its workers were scoring high on customer service, so Air Canada
decided to reward them. It selected 100 employees and gave each - you ready
for such excitement and generosity? - a $3.78 coupon good for a fast-food
hamburger. Not only did the lucky employees have to eat fast, they had to act
fast - because the coupons were due to expire. And as they gathered over their
sumptuous lunch, they probably pondered over the multi-million retention
bonuses that the airline was offering their top management.

Interested in community work I became president of the Canada Junior Chamber of

longer fly from London, Ontario to Winnipeg and Calgary. The routes are
being stopped due to shifting market demand and the resulting decline in

profitable one. A decision to return to the London market will depend on
improved economic conditions, financial viability of the operations and
availability of aircraft. ZIP began flying these routes last spring. ZIP

. News from the districts.
Vancouver Island & the Gulf Islands Newsletter.
As of March 1st, I will be relinquishing the position of District Director
and will be replaced by Saville Hambleton. As most know, Saville is a past
District Director and Past National President and is taking over on an
interim basis until such time that a permanent volunteer can be found.
The past two years have been rewarding and to say the least most
enlightening with the Air Canada restructuring process, including the
Pension and Benefits aspect which had an effect on all retirees. Hopefully
things appear to be in a positive position now that the company has found a
financial backer.
This gives me the opportunity to thank the following for all the work and
helpful assistance, namely District Committee - Secretary Louise
Falkenberg; Treasurer Marjorie Thorpe and Assistant Director Eric Van der
Holt, plus Terry Baker our Web Master. To the many others such as Patricia
Hill, Eileen Brown, Eddi Palsgraf, Dave Hempsall and their various social
committees, in addition, Bill Wood the chairman of our annual golf
tournament, and also Bob Walker who makes the Victoria coffee klutch a
success. Last but not least, a big thanks to all the Pionairs who make up

Flying to Rome from Stanstead in the U.K. via Ryanair, where the confirmed
seat can be cheaper than standby ZED fare!
Checked baggage allowance is 15kg per
person (no infant allowance). Maximum
weight per bag is 32 kilos. Passengers may
not use the unused allowances of others.
Any excess over 15kg. is chargeable at an
excess fee of £4/€6 per kilo (or local
currency equivalent). Ryanair requires that
all checked baggage is clearly identifiable
with your name and address and contact
numbers or alternatively your flight
confirmation number. Failure to comply with
this requirement will result in a significant
delay in the delivery of your baggage should
your baggage be misplaced.
Many items of sporting equipment including
but not limited to large fishing rods, golf
clubs, bicycles, surfboards, bodyboards,
snowboards and skis are inherently
unsuitable for carriage by airlines operating
fast turnrounds such as Ryanair. However,
upon payment of an additional charge of
£15/€25 (or local currency equivalent) per
sector (flight) and per item irrespective of
weight, Ryanair is prepared to carry such
items on a ‘Limited Release’ (i.e. entirely ‘at
your own risk’ for loss, damage or delay)
basis. You may therefore wish to ensure,
should you wish to ask Ryanair to carry
such equipment on this basis, that you have
suitable private insurance cover in force.
Due to space restrictions, we recommend
that all sports equipment is pre-booked and
pre-paid by calling your local reservation
centre, as not to do so may result in the item
being refused carriage at the airport. If the
fee is not paid at the time of booking or on
your outbound it will still be imposed on
your return journey.
Only one small piece of hand baggage (e.g.
handbag or briefcase), weighing not more
than 7kg and being less than 50cm x 35cm
x 23 cm (20 x 14 x 9ins) in dimensions is
allowed in the cabin.

ZIP to stop London, Ontario operations. As of March 1, ZIP will no
longer fly from London, Ontario to Winnipeg and Calgary. The routes are
being stopped due to shifting market demand and the resulting decline in
revenues. The B737 used on the routes will be deployed onto a more
profitable one. A decision to return to the London market will depend on
improved economic conditions, financial viability of the operations and
availability of aircraft. ZIP began flying these routes last spring. ZIP
also announced that it will launch daily non-stop flights between Montreal
and Winnipeg starting March 1.

Hill, Eileen Brown, Eddi Palsgraf, Dave Hempsall and their various social
committees, in addition, Bill Wood the chairman of our annual golf
tournament, and also Bob Walker who makes the Victoria coffee klutch a
success. Last but not least, a big thanks to all the Pionairs who make up
our phone committees.
I would be remiss in not thanking, on behalf of all Pionairs, the National
Pension and Benefits Committee for all the work done on our behalf.

. Nice to know!
Abbotsford base to close. On March 1, ZIP will no longer fly to Abbotsford
B.C.,
in order to concentrate on flying more profitable routes. Air Canada Jazz began
flying to Abbotsford in the summer of 2001. ZIP took over Abbotsford flying
last spring, utilizing Jazz agents at the airport. In the current low-yield
environment, the B737 aircraft currently serving Abbotsford will be redeployed
to more profitable routes. As the smaller Bombardier and Embraer jets enter the
fleet, the company will look at returning to markets such as Abbotsford.
Air Canada provides more flight choices for “sun” destinations. Starting this
weekend the company is expanding service to “sun” and “fun” destinations. As
of Feb. 7, we’re offering customers weekly Saturday flights from Halifax to
Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic, and on Feb. 8, we’re launching weekly
Sunday flights from Halifax to Cancun, Mexico.

. George Brien sends these memories -
I was just a kid of 18, fresh out of Radio School in
Saint John NB, when my twin brother Gord
and I decided that to work in Aviation Radio in the
busiest airport in Canada would look good on future resumes.
Flying up on a TCA DC3, we were met by a fellow D.O.T
(Transport Canada) employee who took us over to the
"Mercroft Inn/Boarding house" on the lakeshore.
Many Airport/TCA employees used these accommodations, and
the owners gladly let us stay there on credit for 6 weeks until the first
paycheque arrived. They were used to these situations.
Dorval Airport was originally planned to be a BCATP airfield
but St Huberts was becoming to small to handle TCA flights along
with the new "Ferry Command" aircraft. About the fall of 1941, civil
operations were moved to Dorval.
Even in 1952, except along the Lakeshore, the area had not
built up too much. The little Train Station stood between the town

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/transport/chap-2c.html
Scroll down and take a look at the terminal on this picture from
TCA Archives taken in the late 40's.
In Peter Pigott's History of TCA, he notes that the
terminal was modelled on the one at Washington's National Airport,
with its wide lobby like a 4 star hotel.
Looking from airside, to the left would be TCA North Star and
DC3 on the ramp. Inside the Terminal , on the left was TCA
checkin, about 3 positions plus ticketing and behind were
TCA operations/radio etc along with baggage assembly.
I dont recall any conveyor belts so baggage was likely
"man handled" back to the carts.
Across the lobby were small counters for Northeast Airlines
/Colonial/ and CPA. Parked on that side of the ramp appears
to be a Colonial DC4 and a NEA Convair 240 and a CP or NE DC3.
The terminal did have a small restaurant with counter stool and a few
tables,
located just to the right of the main entrance.
Transport Canada's Radio Operators handled all radio operations
except TCA and we were located on the second floor.
Four positions were normally manned, including CPA, Northeast Airlines,
Colonial Airlines plus a position for regular weather broadcasts
and other aircraft.
The operating position was similar to this BC Aviation Museum mockup.
http://www.bcam.net/displays/display1.htm
CPA used a fleet of DC3's to cover their route extending down the
St. Lawrence including YQB/Bagotville/Rimouski/Mont Joli/
Sept Isles/Magdelans.
West route included Rouyn and Val D'or. Some of these CPA
stations would also send us, by Morse Code, the hourly airport weather
which we would relay to the weather office.
These were the routes that were traded off to TCA later in 1956
Northeast Airlines, like TCA, started out as an offshoot of a Railway
in the early 1930's. First with the Boston&Maine and then the
Central Vermont ( The CNR interesting enough, owned part of the C.V.)
Originally named National Airways, it flew a couple of Lockheed 10a's
and added DC3's in 1941 and DC4's in 1946 along with Convair 240's in 49..
The name was changed to NEA in 1940 and eventually became Delta.
A look at an old schedule shows how their "milk run'
followed closely the rail line.
http://www.timetableimages.com/ttimages/ne3403i.htm
Colonial Airlines, originally called Canadian Colonial, a Canadian
owned company, also had an early history flying into Montreal.
As early as 1930, scheduled flights were operating LGA/ALB/YHU
LGA/BTV/YHU and in 1937, on to YOW. Their Timetable indicated
DC3's in the late 30's and 40's.Flying skiers north to enjoy the
Laurentiens was popular as this picture shows.
http://www.krohn.org/links2/pages/Detailed/969.html
After the war, they added DC4's and routes were extended to
include BDA and DCA along with cities in NY State.
The Canadian Colonial name was changed to Colonial in 1942
and eventually to EAL in 1955.
All inter national flights were handled from the Intl Terminal.
This was located up the ramp,to the right of the Domestic Terminal.
I,m not too familar with this Terminal although I worked the
Trans Atlantic radio circuits from this building for a while.
I believe it was an old wooden building built for wartime use
and Airlines using it would be TCA/BOAC/KLM.

. Tony Colemann - Director UK Pionairs sends this -
Clipped wings BA Outbid For Heathrow Slots
Qantas and Virgin Atlantic have trumped British Airways by paying record sums
for scarce take-off and landing slots at London's congested Heathrow airport.
The Australian flag carrier, a BA partner, has paid pounds 20m - up to twice
the normal rate - for two pairs of daily slots, industry sources said. Virgin
has paid a similar sum for four pairs.
"They've certainly paid top dollar, in fact a shedload of money," sources said
of deals which are traditionally conducted in a grey market rather than by open
auction.
The moves by Qantas and Virgin are seen as underlining a more optimistic future
for sales and growth in an industry ravaged by falling passenger numbers and
revenues.
The much prized slots belonged to FlyBE, the low-cost carrier once known as
British European and owned by family trusts set up by the late Sir Jack Walker,
former millionaire owner of Blackburn Rovers.
The loss-making airline, based in Exeter, reported increases of up to 70% in
passengers flown last year from regional airports such as Southampton and
Belfast, Birmingham and Bristol.
BA, which is expected to announce plans for a further pounds 300m-plus
cost-cutting programme next month, paid about pounds 12m last autumn for a pair
of Heathrow slots owned by United Airlines - and, earlier, a relatively modest
pounds 35m for eight Swiss International daily slots. It has 40% of the total.
Virgin said it planned to extend its services from Heathrow to the US, as well
as to Africa and Asia.
